How to Auto Update Games on PS4

In the previous generation of game consoles, downloading updates could be a tedious process where you would have to manually update each game individually, but that is no longer the case with the PS4. It is possible to set up your console to automatically download games for you, even when it is turned off. There are a number of different settings on the PS4 that will make automatically downloading games a breeze. So let’s dig into how to auto update games on PS4.

It should be noted that it’s not advised to enable automatic downloads if you have a cap on your internet usage. Some updates can be rather large, and you don’t want to unknowingly exceed your allowance.

If all of the automatic download options are switched off on your PS4, system updates and game updates will always ask for permission to download. If you’re happy with all updates downloading automatically, which is the faster and easier solution, automatic download settings need to be switched on. In order to do this, head on over to Settings. This is done by pressing up on the system menu and scrolling to the right. From here, scroll towards the bottom, select System and then Automatic Downloads. To have games update automatically, be sure to have “Application Update Files” switched on. With this switched on, your installed games will have any updates download automatically as and when they are released. Other useful options in this menu are “System Software Update Files” and “Install Automatically.” Switching these options on will automatically download and install system updates without you having to lift a finger.

There is also the option to enable automatic downloads while the PS4 is in Rest Mode. Rest Mode is a standby-like mode where the PS4 remains connected to the internet. However, automatic downloads in Rest Mode is a feature only available to PlayStation Plus members. To take advantage of this, go to Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on the option “Stay Connected to the Internet.” If this option is active along with the options from the Automatic Downloads menu, your PS4 will automatically download game updates while the system is on standby.
