Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Get Rid of Villagers

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Animal Crossing New Horizons is all about building a peaceful community from the ground up. But sometimes your utopian colony needs to be ruled with an iron fist if it’s to be shaped in the vision you intended it, right? That means eviction. Here’s how to get rid of villagers in Animal Crossing New Horizons if there’s someone who isn’t cutting the mustard and needs to go.

As with many things in New Horizons, from construction projects to farming resources, the process of removing villagers from an island is a time-consuming one. It is possible, thankfully, but it takes patience.

Unfortunately, there’s not really any option to simply select a villager and boot them off the island. Instead, you’ll have to resort to a campaign of cold-shouldering, bad-mouthing, and being downright mean until they decide to leave themselves.

First and foremost, your main tactic should be to completely ignore said pesky villager that you want rid of. Keep speaking with all your other villagers but totally ignore the one that you’ve selected for eviction — that includes email correspondence.

You can also try hitting that villager with a bug net to upset them even further if you’re feeling super mean spirited.

After a while, you should notice them walking around with a speech bubble above their head. Now it’s time to finally talk to them — low and behold, they will inform you that they are thinking of relocating. You can now convince them otherwise to agree that it’s a good idea they leave.

Another method that may speed up the process is to lodge formal complaints with Isabelle once she has joined your island (here’s how to get Isabelle). To do so, you’ll also need to have upgraded your Resident Services building, which you’ll only be able to do so after you have built a museum and Nook’s Cranny, as well as inviting three new residents to join the island. Isabelle’s office is found within the upgraded Resident Service building.

And that is everything there is to know about how to get rid of villagers in Animal Crossing New Horizons. For more useful tips and guides on the game, be sure to check out Twinfinite’s guide wiki page.
