All Addams Family Members Supernatural Powers, Explained

A guide to the supernatural powers of the Addams family.

I have spent a lot of time recently looking into the bizarre history of the Addams lineage. Most people just see them as a spooky family that likes to play with guillotines, but once you start digging into the details, you realize there is a massive supernatural system at work. If you are just starting your journey into this macabre world, make sure to follow the best way to watch the movies before diving too deep into the modern lore.

In my experience, the most interesting thing about the Addams family is not just that they are weird, but that they are actually a different species called Outcasts. This is not just a personality trait; it is a biological reality that determines everything from their psychic abilities to how much electricity they can pump through their fingertips.

The Difference Between Ravens and Doves

One of my favorite discoveries in the recent series is the way they categorize psychic visions. It turns out that psychic abilities in the Addams and Frump families are split into two categories based on how the person sees the world.

  • Wednesday Addams is known as a Raven. Her visions are dark, potent, and usually involve seeing some kind of terrible tragedy from the past or future.
  • Morticia Addams is a Dove. I noticed that her visions are much more positive and happy, which matches her more calm and sophisticated personality.
  • The psychic weight of being a Raven is actually dangerous. Morticia’s sister, Ophelia Frump, actually had a total psychic collapse and was sent to an institution because her dark visions were so unpredictable.
  • I think it is fascinating that we finally got to see the ancestor who started it all. But understanding who Goody Addams is and how she saved the family bloodline adds a whole new layer to everything that comes after.

The Human Lightning Bolts

Uncle Fester and Pugsley belong to a group of Outcasts called Sparks. This basically means they are human batteries. I actually looked into the numbers behind Fester’s lightbulb trick, and he claims to possess about 110 watts of power. If we look at the physics, we can see how much current I he is actually generating by using the power formula:

I = P / V

Since a standard lightbulb runs on 110 volts, Fester is effectively channeling 1 ampere of current through his body. For a normal person, that would be fatal, but Fester’s specialized physiology has orange marmalade in his veins and no fingerprints, which helps him handle the high voltage.

  • Uncle Fester can shoot bolts of lightning from his hands, which he uses for everything from bank robberies to jumpstarting a heart.
  • Pugsley is just starting to show these powers too. In season 2, he actually managed to bring a dead student back to life as a zombie by accident.
  • Gomez Addams used to be a Spark as well. I found out that he actually lost his powers during a botched experiment when he was a teenager at Nevermore Academy.

The Secret Origins of Thing

For years, I just assumed Thing was a family pet or a magical servant. However, the deep lore reveals that Thing is actually the severed right hand of a man named Isaac Night. I was shocked when I realized that the name Thing is actually a perfect anagram for Night.

Thing was animated by an electrical surge during the same experiment that stripped Gomez of his powers. Morticia had to chop the hand off to save Gomez, and the family took it in ever since. I love that the modern show gives Thing so much personality, even showing him attending support groups for other disembodied parts as he searches for his own identity.

Building a House to Withstand Anything

If you have ever seen the original 1991 movie, you know the mansion is a sprawling, dangerous maze. While it looks like an old Victorian home, I discovered some technical details that explain why it never falls down during Fester’s explosions.

  • The 1998 series reveals that the house is actually constructed from bomb proof titanium rather than wood.
  • The actual house used for the exterior in the first TV episode was located at 21 Chester Place in Los Angeles, but it only had two floors. The production crew took a photo and had a painter add the third floor and the iconic tower.
  • The interior is dynamic, featuring between 24 and 27 rooms, including a bottomless pit and secret dungeons.
  • The mailbox and the entrance gate are both sentient and will actually interact with people who come to visit.

Gomez Addams and the Two Billion Dollar Business

Gomez is a multi-billionaire, and I find his business strategy to be one of the funniest parts of the lore. He does not really care about money, which actually makes him a better investor because he is never afraid to take a risk.

  • His net worth is estimated at about 2 billion dollars, putting him right on the list of the richest fictional characters ever.
  • He owns a crocodile farm, a salt mine, and even a uranium mine.
  • His tombstone factory is a great business move because it is essentially recession proof.
  • Gomez even owns two acres in the middle of Central Park in New York City, which was given to his ancestors by Queen Isabella of Spain.

Mansion Mayhem and Gaming Abilities

When I played the game Mansion Mayhem, I got to see how these supernatural traits actually work in a combat setting. Each character has a specific tool that matches their powers.

  • Wednesday uses her pet octopus, Socrates, as a jetpack to fly over gaps with ink.
  • Gomez uses the Mazurka Saber to slice through obstacles and glide through the air.
  • Morticia uses a Spider Sling to grapple onto objects and swing across the rooms.
  • Pugsley uses handcrafted bombs to blow up barriers and roll around the environment.

I am really excited to see where the story goes next, and the writers are likely going to dive even deeper into the mystery of the Frump family and the Night lineage.
