Fans of Twisted Metal and car-based combat rejoice, it looks like Sony are getting back on the wagon for another bout of Sweet Tooth-centric fun. The Japanese technology giant has registered a trademark in Europe through the European Union’s own trademark body.
The body, with the longest name known to humanity of the Office of Harmonization in the Internal Market, listed a trademark filing today from Sony that was simply branded Twisted Metal. The filing, which can be found here, covers three different classes of product. They are internet-based electronic games services, toys and playthings (read as: merchandise), and computer games software.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe filed the trademark request for Twisted Metal on the 19th of February 2015 but as of yet it hasn’t been approved. Not that the OHIM wouldn’t approve it as there’s no reason for them not to do so.
Could this mean that we will be seeing a new Twisted Metal game? Well that’s a little unlikely. David Jaffe, the man behind the franchise for the most part, is off creating third person arena shooter Drawn to Death and he isn’t going to just up and leave his new baby in order to go back to his old stomping grounds.
Maybe Sony are planning to put the game into the hands of another developer. Hell maybe they’re considering making another Match-3 game like the latest incarnation of Fat Princess on PlayStation Vita.
Sadly, the most likely reason for this trademark filing of Twisted Metal is because Sony wants to protect its own property. One would assume this because the latest Twisted Metal entry on PlayStation 3 didn’t exactly light a fire under the retailers.
