A year after the Silent Hills/P.T. demo was released on the PlayStation Store, Guillermo Del Toro has stated that he is hesitant about trying to create another video game.
In an interview with ShackNews, Del Toro said:
“I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”
It wasn’t all a waste of time, however. Del Toro said that he has learned a lot from working with Hideo Kojima and THQ and that it has changed the way he tells his stories. Del Toro first tried to create a video game called Insane with THQ and worked on it for two years before it was canceled.
Years later Del Toro teamed up with Konami and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima to start work on Silent Hills, which was first revealed via a truly terrifying demo called P.T. This game was ultimately canceled after Kojima left Konami for reasons we still haven’t been told.
“Then I went to the side of Kojima, because he’s a master, and I can gladly say that we are friends and I love his work and I will continue learning from him as a friend,” said Del Toro. “But I am not… if I join another video game, World War III will start.”
Guillermo Del Toro did say that he would still be open to the idea of a developer adapting one of his franchises into a video game and that he would assist to help make the game good, but he wouldn’t get as involved as he was for Silent Hills.
“I can be creative about it, and I can be educated about it, and talk about it in a way that helps them make the video game. But no – I can’t,”
