Last week, Capcom dropped a new trailer and gameplay video for the upcoming Resident Evil Village, the latest mainline entry in the long-running survival horror franchise. We got a good look at some new characters, the new gothic horror setting, and here are a few tiny details you might’ve missed from all that new footage.
Ethan’s Wedding Ring
Ethan Winters is coming back as the main protagonist of Resident Evil Village, and the game follows up from the canon ending of the previous game, where you save Mia and escape together. While it’s not clear exactly what Ethan and Mia have been doing since the ordeal with the Bakers and Evelyn, it’s clear that they’ve made amends and have started a life together.
Ethan’s wedding ring is a highly visible item on his left hand when we view things from his perspective in the gameplay trailer, and when we see Chris again in the new trailer, we also see him taking away a baby who we can only assume is Ethan and Mia’s daughter.
Rose
This is a very tiny detail, but we also now know the name of Ethan’s daughter. During the gameplay video, while you might’ve been focused on the inventory management system making a return from the beloved Resident Evil 4, you might’ve also failed to notice the game objective on the left side of the screen.
It states that the player’s current task is to look for Rose in the castle. Of course, it’s entirely possible that Rose might be some other NPC that Ethan has encountered in Resident Evil Village, but it seems more likely that Rose is the name of Ethan’s daughter.
Mother Miranda
Early on in the trailer, we see Lady Dimitrescu on the phone with someone named Mother Miranda. It’s highly likely that Miranda is the big boss of Resident Evil Village — the one pulling all the strings.
However, it’s also worth noting that during the game’s announcement trailer, we got to hear a local tale from Mia about a certain mother and her daughter looking for berries in the woods.
Of course, with Mia, nothing is ever just a local tale or a simple children’s story. Nothing can ever be taken at face value, and with the series’ past obsession with female characters becoming intimidating figures or monsters, Mother Miranda herself could very well be related to the figure Mia referenced in her story.
Hivemind
During the brief glimpses of the village surrounding the castle itself, we couldn’t help but notice that everyone seemed to know Ethan’s name. Of course, we would expect Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters to know who he is, since they did snatch up his daughter, but it’s still a bit odd that every random villager seems to know him too.
This leads us to believe that the mold from Resident Evil 7, or at least some sort of strange bioweapon similar to it, has to be involved here, giving the villagers hivemind capabilities. If one persons knows his name, then everyone else in the village would naturally know about him too.
While Capcom has revealed quite a bit of Resident Evil Village’s setting and atmosphere, there’s still so much we don’t know. Like why Chris would suddenly murder Mia and kidnap his daughter, and the significance of Ethan’s bloodline. Still, these tiny details from the trailers might come in useful later when the full game is out, and the mysteries start to unravel themselves.
Resident Evil Village is set to be released on May 7.
