Here’s How Mass Effect: Andromeda Stacks Up Against Other March Games

Mass Effect: Andromeda is the latest entry in Bioware’s incredibly popular sci-fi RPG series. The title separates itself by taking things to an entirely new galaxy, and featuring an entirely new cast of characters. So far, however, the game has received a lukewarm reception. Numerous issues like technical and graphical hitches, poor animations, and repetitive side content have held the title back from reaching the reception of the original trilogy.

Here, we’ll walk through the biggest releases of March 2017, from worst to best reviewed, breaking down the Metacritic scores of each, as well as where Mass Effect: Andromeda falls in the grand scheme of things.    

Super Bomberman R – 64

Super Bomberman R sees the series’ first entry in nearly 7 years, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. It features an online battle mode as well as a fully fledged campaign that can be played in co-op. Unfortunately, the game hasn’t been as well received as you could hope.

The title sits near the bottom of the big March releases with a 64 on Metacritic, based on 52 ratings. It sounds like a mixed bag mostly, with a lackluster storyline and too few gameplay options, although it does capture the charm of older Bomberman games. Its user score is about the same, with a 6.7 based on 162 ratings.

Lego Worlds – 71

LEGO Worlds is basically the LEGO version of Minecraft, letting players loose into a massive brick world where they can build and do whatever they want. It’s packed with different environments, objects, and bricks that you can use to construct your ideal world. It released on March 7 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, meeting decent reception overall.

Averaging the three version’s scores, it sits at a 71 on Metacritic, based on over 20 critics. User score is about even with an average of 6.8, based on over 50 ratings.

Styx: Shards of Darkness – 75

The original Styx was a surprise hit of a stealth game, casting you into the role of a sneaky goblin by the same name. The second game, Shards of Darkness, continues the story, as Styx has to sneak into Dark Elven city of Körangar to find out why they’ve made an alliance with the Dwarves. It’s a stealth game through and through, and you’re going to need to do a lot of sneaking and stabbing along the way.

Styx: Shards of Darkness released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 14. Averaging out the three versions, it currently sits at a 75 on Metacritic, based on over 25 critics. User score is pretty similar sitting at roughly a 7.1, based on over 30 ratings.

Toukiden 2 – 78

Toukiden 2 is the third installment in Tecmo Koei’s demon killing hack-and-slash series. This time around the game features more of an open world, although certain areas will be locked depending on your progress.  It also features more customization options for your character, enhanced combat abilities, and new enemy types, among other things.

The title released on March 21 for PS4 and PS Vita, and has so far been doing fairly well on Metacritic. The game has a 78 on the site, based on 18 critics. User score currently sits higher with an 8.3, based on 16 ratings.

Mass Effect: Andromeda – 77

Mass Effect: Andromeda is the first entry we’ve seen from the franchise in five years, taking things to an entirely new galaxy with a brand new set of characters. A few big changes have also been made to combat and exploration, adding on a jetpack amidst a host of other new options.

Mass Effect: Andromeda sits squarely in the middle of releases for March, coming out on Xbox One, PC, and PS4. The title currently sits at an average of 77 on Metacritic, based on over 50 critics. User score, unfortunately, has not fared as well, with an average of about 3.8 based on over 600 ratings.

Danganronpa 1.2 Reload – 83

Danganronpa 1.2 Reload bundles two critically acclaimed games into one package on the PlayStation. Unfortunately, there isn’t all that much new to the package, as the two titles are basically ports and nothing else. However, this hasn’t hurt the Danganronpa game’s popularity, and 1.2 Reload has reviewed quite well.

Danganronpa 1.2 Reload currently sits at an 83 on Metacritic, based on 16 critics. User score falls slightly below that mark, falling to 7.3 based on 18 ratings.

NieR: Automata – 89

The first NieR title was an overlooked cult classic on Xbox 360 and PS3, featuring a deeply complex and emotional story that even has ties to the Drakengard series. NieR: Automata is loosely connected to the original, taking place thousands of years in the future, as androids fight mysterious machines for the future of humanity. The title was co-developed by Platinum Games, who brings their trademark over the top action combat to the table. NieR Automata released on March 7 for PS4, and it’s reviewed incredibly well.

NieR: Automata is currently at an 89 on Metacritic, based on a whopping 78 critics. User score is spot on with an 8.9, based on an equally impressive over 1400 ratings.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 97

The Legend of Zelda has long been one of the most defining video game series around, and its latest entry is one to remember. Breath of the Wild takes the series in a new direction, providing players with a massive open world to explore, along with a nonlinear story. It’s quickly become one of the highest rated games of all time, and easily the highest rated game on the Nintendo Switch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild currently rests at an incredible 97 on Metacritic, based on 92 critics. User score is surprisingly less than critic score, however, with a 7.5 based on over 8000 ratings.
