Spider-Man (Sept. 7 on PlayStation 4)

Following their success with original IPs like Resistance the Ratchet and Clank series, Insomniac Games made waves with the reveal that they would create a title based on the iconic Spider-Man franchise. They haven’t disappointed either; set in a fully realized Manhattan flush with detail, the game makes the player feel like they are the iconic web-slinger as they track down the many villains on the loose in the city and fight to bring them to justice. To do this, they’ll swing through the city along skyscrapers, fly to and fro between enemies in frantic fist fights and try to survive the many titanic set pieces scattered throughout the story. It’s a great title not only for fans of the long-running comic but for anyone who enjoys a quality action adventure experience and shouldn’t be missed.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Sept. 4 on PlayStation 4 and PC)

After many years without a localized release in the west, the Dragon Quest series is back with the phenomenal Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive age. As a chosen hero of light, players must venture out into the land of Erdrea, gather allies and track down the lord of Shadow, a nefarious figure who intends to drag the land into darkness with the revival of an ancient evil. Along the way, they’ll find their way into any number of adventures from harrowing dives into monster-infested dungeons to heart-warming interactions with some of the world’s many NPCs. It’s a quintessential example of what a JRPG can be in the modern gaming landscape, and shouldn’t be missed by anyone who fancies themselves a fan of the genre or the series.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Sept. 14 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC)

The conclusion to the thrilling reboot trilogy, Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks to take players to the darker side of Lara Croft’s adventures for fame, glory, and relics of the forgotten past. Following the events of the second game, Lara sets off to Latin America in search of a treasure with ties to her late father. Unfortunately, when she draws closer to this treasure, she inadvertently triggers a Mayan apocalypse and is forced to find a way to stop it and prevent the shadowy organization Trinity from harnessing it to their advantage. Gritty, grim and visceral, the footage was shown of the game so far has depicted a title that will push its protagonist to the edge, either hardening her into brilliance or crushing her into dust under the weight of its challenges. Either way, it’ll be a wild ride the whole way through.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 (Sept. 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC)

It’s been many years since a mainline entry in the Valkyria Chronicles series made its way to the west, but Valkyria Chronicles 4 is set to change that. Set during the second Europan War, the title follows the members of Squad E as they take part in Operation Northern Cross, a last-ditch effort by the Federate army to capture the Imperial capital and end the war. The soldiers quickly realize they’re taking part in a suicide mission when a Valkyria turns the battlefield into an icy wasteland, and they’ll have to strategize their way through each encounter if they want to see the end of the war and make it home alive.

Full of lovable characters and mind-bending strategic challenges delivered in the series’ trademark cell-shaded aesthetic, Valkyria Chronicles 4 looks to take everything people love about the series and refine it. For anyone who has been looking for a satisfying strategy RPG experience, there’s no better choice than this.

life is strange 2

Dontnod Entertainment is back behind the wheel of the Life is Strange series for the official second entry, and it’s already shaping up to be a promising narrative experience. Following a strange event caught on camera that leaves a police officer dead, two brothers – Sean Diaz and his younger brother, Daniel – go on the run across the country, alluding capture and learning more about the powers one of them begins to display. Along the way, players will be tasked with making choices that influence not only their relationships with other characters but also the outcome of the story and the fates of the two brothers involved. It may not be the easiest of titles to take part in, but it will be an engrossing one all the same.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country (Sept. 14 on Nintendo Switch)

While Xenoblade Chronicles 2 may not have been a perfect title, the story and characters presented by it were ripe for further exploration via additional entries in the series. Enter Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country, a prequel set 500 years before the events of the second game. Players take the role of Lora and Jin in their quest to vanquish Malos and his evil forces, all the while drawing closer to events that will drag heroes of light into the darkness and create the villains seen in the far-off future.

Boasting a refined battle system and a cast of characters on par with the best the series has to offer, The Golden Country looks to take what was learned from the last entry and improve upon it. It may not sway those who didn’t check out the second entry in the series, but it’ll more than satisfy those who did and wanted more from this promising JRPG franchise.
