To celebrate the spooky holiday season and my personal favorite day of the year, Steam has treated us with a Halloween Sale that will run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1. In that time, you can pick up a number of horror games for a steal. Here are a few gems we think you should definitely pick up.
Resident Evil 2
The Resident Evil 2 remake is a lovely HD update to the original game, and is going to be considered by many as a game of the year for this year.
The remake brought what we loved and remembered about the original into modern times. It really showed us how far we’ve gone in video game development.
Depending on who you ask, Resident Evil 2 may or may not be scary, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a part of one of the O.G. horror series.
You can find Resident Evil 2 in the Halloween Sale for $29.99. Check out our review of the game if you’re still trying to decide to grab it or not.
SOMA
Disturbing, eerie, atmospheric, and downright spooky, SOMA has a lot of the horror elements that can make you very unsettled.
Not only is it a great experience, it also has a story that will make you feel certain emotions like hurt, sympathy, and a whole lot of confusion.
Made by the same devs who gave us the classic Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA really does hit you with a different kind of horror that relies more on atmosphere and suspense than jump scares.
Grab the game for $4.49 on Steam.
Little Nightmares
A horror puzzle game, Little Nightmares gives you a story that will continue to tug at your heartstrings long after you’ve finished the game.
Filled with creepy moments, fun puzzles, and eerie characters, Little Nightmares will surely entertain even the most hardcore horror fan.
The game may be short compared to some of the others on this list but it will still leave a lasting impression once you’re done.
Give Little Nightmares a try for $4.99.
Outlast
A different take on survival horror, Outlast is a first person horror game that keeps you on your toes by not giving you any way to fight any of the enemies you encounter. Hiding and running are all you can do while you move deeper and deeper into the insane asylum.
Stuck only with a camera, a handful of batteries, and your wits, Outlast really makes you work to make it through each level.
Don’t even get me started on the game’s story. It’ll leave you scratching your head for a bit once you’re done.
You can take Outlast for a spin for $3.99.
Limbo
We would sing praise to Limbo to the end of time if we could. It’s atmospheric, beautifully designed, and it challenges your brain with a number of puzzles while it guides you through a gorgeous landscape.
Granted, Limbo isn’t particularly scary. It’s more suspenseful and mysterious than it is horrific but it still has an odd sort of off-putting vibe while you play.
Limbo absolutely doesn’t need words to convey its meaning and story and it’s a game every puzzle platformer fan should try.
Limbo can be found during the Halloween Sale for $2.29.
Darkwood
Here’s a true survival horror game that will have you shaking in your boots. Trapped in a mysterious forest, you must find ways to escape during the day and survive against demons and horrors at night.
Full of uniquely crafted characters, interesting gameplay mechanics, and a top down perspective, Darkwood really takes you on a wild nightmarish ride.
It’s distantly Lovecraftian and blatantly scary. Darkwood is definitely a game you shouldn’t play with the lights off.
Grab this spooky darling for $5.99.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
A classic by now, Amnesia is a game that soared in popularity back when it came out in 2010. And there’s no doubt it’s because of the game’s ability to insight fear and anxiety into people whenever they play.
A monstrous creature constantly follows your every move as you move deeper and deeper into the game’s eerie setting and uncover the dark secrets it holds.
Many other monsters are hidden deep within the castle that will certainly give you plenty of phobias.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent still spooks to this day and you can grab it during the Halloween Sale for $2.99.
Lisa: The Painful
Okay, Lisa technically isn’t a horror game but it is so disturbing at certain points that it hits you with a weird and awkward terror.
The game mixes incredibly dark humor with great RPG elements, a fantastic soundtrack, and a tear-jerking story to create something really magnificent.
On the surface Lisa looks like it would be a fun and simple game but in a Doki Doki Literature kind of way it leaves you stunned, shocked, and incredibly blindsided. There’s a reason it’s called Lisa: The Painful.
Grab this odd darling for $4.99 on Steam.
Alan Wake
Depending on who you ask, Alan Wake may be more thriller than it is horror but we can all agree that it has a unique and eerie sort of spook value that makes the game what it is.
Its flashlight mechanics also makes its gameplay stand out as a horror FPS, especially since the enemies you fight need to be weakened by light before you can even kill them.
Honestly, an Alan Wake sequel (not including American Nightmare) would be welcome news. Alas, we can only hope Remedy will give Alan Wake a little attention after they’re done with Control.
You can grab this flashlight simulator for $4.04 during the Halloween Sale.
Dead Space 2
Dead Space and horror go hand in hand at this point in gaming history. The Dead Space series really knows which buttons to push to freak players out. Space, aliens, and broken down spaceships make a terrifying experience.
Dead Space 2 in particular ups the ante with its horror, brutality, and gore and I’m not just talking about the eye scene, even though that on its own could send even the least squeamish people running from the room.
It perfectly mixes the anxiety of isolation, psychological horror, and survival horror together to create a game that is incredibly hard to forget.
Find this absolutely eye widening game during Steam’s Halloween Sale for $4.99.
