Is Fortnite Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) Disabled? Answered

Skill-based matchmaking in Fortnite was a bit of a godsend when it was enabled a few seasons back. This system aimed to match players together who shared similar stats and throw them into a game together. In other words, good players play with good players, and less experienced players play against fellow inexperienced players. However, following a recent update to Fortnite, some fans may be wondering if skill-based matchmaking has been disabled.

Fortnite Skill-Based Matchmaking – What You Need to Know

So here’s the deal. It appears as though a week or two ago, Epic Games did in fact disable Skill-Based Matchmaking in the Squads game mode, but not other modes. This was then addressed by Epic a few days following the update:

As has been the case with the entire Battle Royale game since the beginning of Chapter 2, Epic Games hasn’t shared details as to what these tweaks or changes are. Instead, we’re simply left with the knowledge that the Squads playlist received some tweaks to its matchmaking and the changes seemed very noticeable.

What Changed When Skill-Based Matchmaking was Disabled?

Players noticed that a lot of their games were being filled with a large number of Bots, making things far less enjoyable than usual.

Some players found games seemingly filled entirely with bots, while others noticed it was significantly easier to get a Victory Royale following the Squad playlist tweaks. Whether this was the disabling of skill-based matchmaking in this playlist entirely, or just some major tweaks remain to be seen.

So Is Skill-Based Matchmaking Still Disabled in Fortnite?

Again, it’s worth pointing out here that, according to what Epic Games has communicated with fans, only the Squads game mode has been affected by any changes to skill-based matchmaking.

That being said, there are rumors that whatever Epic Games did in the first place has largely been reversed this week. It’s worth noting, however, as data miner and popular Fortnite leaker HYPEX has pointed out, that there’s no way for anyone other than Epic to confirm whether changes have made, so just take what you read with a pinch of salt.

For now, it’s just a case of waiting and seeing if Epic Games communicate any changes to skill-based matchmaking. If they do, we’ll update this post and let you know.

That’s everything you need to know about whether skill-based matchmaking in Fortnite is still active. For more tips, tricks, and guides, be sure to check out our ever-expanding guide wiki for Chapter 2 Season 2, search for Twinfinite, or check out more of our coverage below.
