How to Get the Scary Painting in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Just like all other art pieces currently available in the game, the Scary Painting can only be purchased for 4,980 Bells from Redd. Alternatively, if you know of any other players who might be kind enough to drop it from you, you can trade with them instead.

Redd shows up randomly to your island once a week and can be found on the north beach. Enter his trawler and he’ll have a random selection of art pieces on sale. His catalog rotates each time, so there’s a chance that he might have the Scary Painting available when he visits. Examine and purchase it, and he’ll send it to your mailbox the next day.

Real & Fake Differences

The Scary Painting is based off of Otani Oniji II, by Toshusai Sharaku. The man in the painting is scowling and frowning, and the fake versions typically have his eyebrows arched in a sad frown.

Essentially, if you see a sad frown, that’s definitely a fake.

In addition to that, there is also a haunted version of this painting where the man is smiling with a sad frown. The haunted effect is only visible if you have the fake version so if you’d like to collect all the haunted paintings, you’ll need to buy the fake.
