Changing Difficulty in Shenmue 3

To change difficulty in Shenmue 3, you’ll need to first open your inventory menu by pressing R1. Now, go all the way to the bottom of this menu to the ‘Settings’ option. From there, go down to ‘Game Mode.’ This is the game’s difficulty setting, it’s just worded in a different way than usual.

You can now toggle between the game’s four difficulty settings. These are, Story Mode, Recommended Mode, Challenge Mode, and Nightmare Mode. Changing the difficulty will namely make changes to how forgiving the combat sections of the game are, allowing you to enjoy the story with fewer stresses of hitting the game over screen.

What’s more, there’s no difficulty trophy tied to beating the game on a particular difficulty. In fact, there’s no trophy for completing the game at all, let alone on any difficulty.

That’s everything you need to know to change difficulty in Shenmue 3. For more tips, tricks, and guides, be sure to head over to our guide wiki, search for Twinfinite, or check out more of our guides below.
