Best Upcoming Xbox One Games for May 2019

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

So we’re almost halfway through 2019 in gaming. E3 is right around the corner and while we’re in a bit of a drought of games compared to the crazy start to the year, there are still some worthwhile upcoming Xbox One games coming up for May 2019.

On the front of games coming from major AAA publishers, there’s Rage 2 coming from a team compromised of Bethesda, Id, and Avalanche Studio.

If you’re into episodic games, you can pick up where you left on in Life is Strange 2 and get going on Episode 3. Life is Strange 2 Episode 1 and 2 are available on Game Pass if you’re a subscriber so you can give it a try there if you like.

Team Sonic Racing continues the legacy of surprisingly good kart racing games featuring Sonic and his pals and those looking for something a bit off the beaten path can dive into A Plague Tale: Innocence, a new action-adventure game from the makers of ReCore.

Check out the list of our recommendations with release dates and continue along if you want some more detail about each title that we anticipate will be the best upcoming Xbox One games of May 2019.

  • Life is Strange 2 Episode 3 – May 9
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence – May 14
  • Rage 2 – May 14
  • Team Sonic Racing – May 21

Life is Strange 2 Episode 3

Life is Strange 2 Episode 3

Life is Strange 2 Episode 3 will pick up the story of Daniel and Sean as the pair learn more about younger brother Sean’s mysterious powers.

We won’t dive into heavy spoilers as you can easily jump into the game still if you have Game Pass (or even if you don’t, it’s just that it’s free on Game Pass if you did already have that), but unlike Max from the first game who was already a young adult comfortable in her own skin in a lot of ways, Sean is still a very young boy that still has a lot of growing up to do.

It’s up to you (as Daniel) to guide Sean and help him to use his powers responsibly while also sorting out the difficult situation that you’re both in after the untimely death of your father.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale: Innocence combines action-adventure and puzzle gameplay set during Asobo Studios’ take on the Black Death.

You’ll need to drive away rats carrying the plague while also fighting and avoiding angry antagonistic knights that seek to do you harm.

Like Life is Strange the story will be focused on two siblings that are going through some family and societal issues. Fair enough considering they are living through arguably one of the darkest and most awful periods in all of human history, especially European history.

Rage 2

Rage 2

The first Rage game was fine, but it felt muted and kind of just blended in with all of the other shooter games that were flooding the market at that time.

But single-player focused FPS games are kind of back in vogue since Doom and Wolfenstein (and others) made them cool again, and Rage 2 is looking to make its own impression on the revitalized scene with vibrant, open world design.

Indeed, Rage 2 is anything but muted. It’s opting for over the top gunplay and bright neon imagery with a Mad-Max vibe to it. We have had two chances to preview it now and each time we walked away with a smile on our face. We won’t have to wait too much longer to see if it lives up to its potential.

Team Sonic Racing

The Sonic Racing games are arguably the best kart-racing franchise not named Mario Kart. And honestly, if you wanted to make the argument that it’s the best kart racing franchise now, I wouldn’t argue with you.

We got a taste of Team Sonic Racing last year at E3 and felt like it was a small burst of new ideas, that freshened up the formula without messing too much with what has worked over the years. The racing itself felt very familiar to the last two games, and the team element forces you to rethink how you use power-ups.

In particular, it will be really fascinating to see how this game will play online with human controlled characters forced to figure out a way to work together. That’s the real hook for me anyway.

That’s it for our choices for the best upcoming Xbox One games for May 2019. Are we missing anything noteworthy? Let us know in the comments below.
