Updated on May 9th, 2019
We’re approaching the finish line of this generation and over the years the Xbox One has put together quite the impressive library of games. These are the best Xbox One games of all time. Ranging from early hits like Gears of War 4, to more recent games like Devil May Cry 5, these are the best that the Xbox One has to offer.
Best Xbox One Games So Far
1. Resident Evil 2 Remake
Resident Evil 2 Remake will likely go down as arguably the best remake of this generation. It takes what was already a classic game and teleports it instantly to 2019 as if it released that year this whole time. The gameplay and story feel almost identical, but it has a modern and beautiful coat of paint that suits it oh so well.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
Our Game of the Year for 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 set new bars when it comes to story telling and open-world exploration. You follow the story of Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch van der Linde gang, as he and the gang try to resist the coming end of the American Wild West. It’s not only a gaming classic, it’s a western classic too.
3. Devil May Cry 5
While many held out hope that Devil May Cry 5 would be a hit, fans we’re kind of holding their breath as it has been a while since we’ve seen a DMC game that had universal appeal. Fortunately Devil May Cry 5 is a return to form. It will transport fans back to when they first fell in love with the series. It brings many of the series’ classic characters and it features a familiar but updated version of its classic stylish action gameplay.
4. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was a brave venture for developers From Software. They worked on this game with help of publisher Activision for the first time, and despite sharing some similarities, it’s quite different still from the ‘Souls’ games that the company has been known for in recent years.
5. Mortal Kombat 11
Mortal Kombat 11 wraps up this generation of great fighting games in the MK series in style. Not only is it the tightest and most balanced iteration of the recent MK games to-date, it features one of the best fighting game stories we’ve seen.. maybe ever? The highly entertaining plot sees the past version of iconic characters meet with the future selves as the try to foil (or assist) the evil Kronika’s plot to reset Mortal Kombat history to her liking.
6. Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves really is in a genre of its own. There aren’t many games that can imitate the feeling of being a pirate as well as Sea of Thieves. In the year since its launch, the game has continued to grow adding story quests, fishing, natural disasters, sea monsters and more. The growth has taken it from an OK game, to one of the best Xbox One games of all time.
7. Kingdom Hearts 3
Kingdom Hearts 3 was a spiritual event for the fans that have been waiting over a decade for the direct follow up to Kingdom Hearts 2. Fortunately for these loyal fans, KH3 ends this story arc in a way that should be satisfying to many players while still doing what it does best: action RPG gameplay that tours us through some of the most iconic Disney properties.
8. Celeste
Celeste was one of the surprise indies hits to come out in 2018. Not only is it one of the best platformers you can find on the Xbox One, it’s also just one of the best platformers of this generation period. It also features tough as nails gameplay and a heartwarming story about mental health, anxiety, being comfortable in your own skin, and never giving up.
9. Monster Hunter: World
Like so many popular (and great) games from this generation Monster Hunter: World modernized the long-running franchise and brings a AAA effort to home consoles. The result were fantastic, and it was one of the best games of 2018 for the Xbox One. Team up with other player-hunters and explore the New World in order to discover and take down massive angry beasts.
10 Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 is as close to a perfect arcade style racing game that you will come across, and it’s definitely one of the best exclusive games on the Xbox One. For starters it’s gorgeous, one of the prettiest games this generation period, but more importantly it’s jam packed with cars, varied events, and online gameplay for extended replay value.
11. Dead Cells
While there have been lots of great rogue-like and rogue-lite games this generation – its a genre that has seen a bit of a renaissance – Dead Cells is the game that put together so much of what has worked in the genre recently into one cohesive and polished package. It’s combines an effective die, upgrade, improve, repeat loop with metroidvania elements and slick timeless retro looking visuals.
12. Valkyria Chronicles 4
One can argue that in spite of there being quite a few Valkyria Chronicles games over the years, there has never really been a proper follow up to the hit game that started it all back in 2008. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is that game. It’s features the strategy that players fell in love with across large battlefields, and has an emotional plot that puts memorable characters through the wringer.
13. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
It’s odd that Treyarch would be the ones to dare to throw away the campaign in Call of Duty for the first time as their tales tend to be the most interesting ones. Still, that’s what happened and we’re not upset, because Black Ops 4 is the most complete multiplayer FPS package we’ve see in quite some time. There’s something for everyone: traditional CoD PvP, cooperative Zombies, and an all-new battle royale game mode known as Blackout; the best part is that all of it is incredibly polished and fun to play.
14. Tekken 7
Tekken 7 over time has grown into one of the most stable and healthy competitive fighting scenes this generation. It honors the gameplay that has made the franchise so successful over the years and polishes it for the current generation, and includes a highly entertaining story mode.
15. Fortnite
While it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and lots of people like to hate on it for its popularity, it’s certainly is a lot of people’s cup of tea, or perhaps their guilty pleasure. There’s a reason it’s the most popular game in the world right now. It’s an incredibly fun battle royale game that features a one of a kind building mechanic which leads to a different experience every time. Plus Epic Games is constantly updating Fortnite to keep the game fresh with new obstacles and weapons to contend with.
16. Rocket League
Rocket League burst onto the scene thanks to being part of a PS Plus offering in the month of its launch. That led to the game growing exponentially fast, and eventually getting ported onto the Xbox One. It’s incredibly popular still to this day, and as an added bonus, the Xbox One version offers cross platform play with PC and Switch.
17. Battlefield 1
Battlefield 1 is one of the few games to tackle the less glamorous, but also incredibly devastating first World War. It features a unique campaign that spans across various theaters of war and has the series’ traditional large scale multiplayer modes also set all over the world.
18. Tacoma
Tacoma is the newest game from the creators of the critically acclaimed, Gone Home, released back in August of 2017, it follows the main character Amy, as she explores an abandoned Lunar Transfer station as she pieces together what happened. If you’re a fan of narrative driven games, you can’t go wrong here.
19. Watch Dogs 2
Even if the first Watch Dogs 2 let you down a tad, Watch Dogs 2 is worth giving a go. A marked improvement over the original, it takes itself way less serious, and is a lot more fun in the process.
20 Inside
Like Tacoma, Inside was the hotly anticipated next game from the creators of the acclaimed Limbo. Inside lived up to the hype and is another feather in the cap of developers Playdead.
21. The Witness
The Witness released in early 2016, but still stands tall as one of the best puzzle games to come out this generation. As you progress toward your ultimate goal, you’ll learn and unlock more of the game’s world.
22. Final Fantasy XV
One of the most infamous vaporware titles of all time, Final Fantasy XV finally released in 2016 and luckily for fans of the acclaimed series, it didn’t crash and burn. In-fact, it’s pretty damn good especially if you’re a fan of action-RPGs, open worlds, and gorgeous visuals.
23. What Remains of Edith Finch
Another narrative driven game, but it’s one that stands out from the rest. Without digging too much into the plot which is the primary reason for playing, it follows Edith Finch as she relives the lives of her cursed family.
24. Minecraft
You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of Minecraft. By now, you probably know the deal. If you have a creative bone, or just want to know what all the fuss is, by all means jump in if you haven’t already. There’s a reason why it’s as popular as it is and regarded as one of the best Xbox One games of all time.
25. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Video games based on other non-gaming licensed property has had a spotty history. However lately that trend has started to be bucked, and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was one of the best games of 2014, and spawned an equally fun sequel.
26. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
Despite the series going on a brief hiatus after Syndicate to prepare better for Origins, Syndicate was actually a great entry in the long running Assassin’s Creed series. More importantly, it washed the bad taste of Unity out of fans’ mouths.
27. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Like DOOM, the Wolfenstein games have seen a revival thanks to a high demand for more traditional single-player focused FPS games. From a narrative perspective, Wolfenstein II stands out as one of the best we’ve seen in the genre in years.
28. Cuphead
It took a while for Cuphead to finally make it to the Xbox One when it first began development back in 2010, but the effort was worth it. It’s one of the most visually striking, unique, and challenging games of this generation.
29. Resident Evil 7
Despite switching to a first-person perspective, Resident Evil 7 feels more like the original classic games than any of the more recent entries. RE7 successfully returns to its survival horror roots and is one of the best games you can play on VR too.
30. Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise of the Tomb Raider proved that the series reboot back in 2014 wasn’t a fluke, and that Lara Croft is here to stay. Rise of the Tomb Raider builds on everything that was great with the first game, and offers up another equally compelling adventure.
31. Ori and the Blind Forest
Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the premiere platformers of this generation. Featuring Metroidvania style gameplay, beautiful visuals, and a touching story, if you’re into 2D platformers, it’s one of the best Xbox One/PC exclusives you can play.
32. Destiny 2
While it had a rough first year, Destiny 2 did eventually evolve into being one of the best loooter-shooters on the market, overtaking its predecessor in many ways. The same polished FPS gameplay mixed with RPG elements is all there, and now after a few expansions, there are loads of content to challenge yourself with, including five raids and raid lairs.
33. Gears of War 4
Gears of War 4 continues the story of Marcus Fenix, and now too, his son, following the events of Gears of War 3. While judgement left some players worried that the franchise was running out of steam, Gears of War 4 put things back on track, and is one of the best exclusives on the Xbox One console.
34. Call of Duty: WWII
Call of Duty: WWII marked the series long-awaited return to its World War II roots, and it proved to be a great move. Well-received by both critics and fans, CoD: WWII is one of the most complete and well-polished entries into the series we’ve seen in years.
35. Assassin’s Creed Origins
Assassin’s Creed Origins plunges the series into new territory by taking it all the way to the beginning. Ubisoft rolled the dice by genre switching into something resembling an action-adventure/RPG hybrid, but it proved to be a risk worth taking as the series following Origins hadn’t felt this fresh in a very long time and the effort makes it one of the best Xbox One games of all time.
36. Life is Strange
Life is Strange was a game that kind of came out of no where, and proved to be one of our favorite games of 2015 and one of our runner-ups for GOTY. The supernatural teen drama put us in the shoes of the likable Max Caufield as she navigates the precarious position of learning how to responsibly use her new time-bending super powers while also saving her town from a disaster.
37. Doom
DOOM (2016) is arguably the most brutal, and un-apologetically metal of all games in the long-running series, which is saying something if you know anything about these games. DOOM is one of the finest FPS games to release this generation and eschews modern trimmings like cover and rechargeable health for just running around and beating every demon you see into a blood pulp for little reason other than you got woken up, you’re cranky, and you’re looking for something to do.
38. Sunset Overdrive
One of the Xbox One’s first exclusive, Sunset Overdrive still holds up incredibly well. Visually, it looks great, and it features a light-hearted and wacky story not usually seen that often these days in a world where many games take themselves way too seriously. If you want to parkour around an open world and shoot zombie-like creatures with insane guns, Sunset Overdrive is worth picking up.
39. Titanfall 2
While DOOM and Wolfenstein II represent a return to the FPS roots, Titanfall 2 brings the modern FPS to new levels. Created by the original Infinity Ward team behind Modern Warfare 2, Titanfall 2 offers up one of the most well-polished, fast-paced and fun multiplayer offerings we’ve seen this generation and much to our surprise at the time of its release, a emotionally gripping and entertaining campaign as well.
40. Dragon Age: Inquisition
After experimenting with differing approaches in the first two Dragon Age games, Bioware landed on something with Dragon Age; Inquisition that was able to please a wide majority of fans. The result is one of the deepest and mst expansive RPGs of this generation thus far.
41. Halo 5
Although there’s a lot less Master Chief than we’re used to, Halo 5 still honors the legendary series with another solid entry and is one of the best Xbox One games of all time, even to this day. Halo 5 is visually impressive, running at a smooth 60 FPS, and has a multitude of ways to play including traditional multiplayer modes, large scale Warzone battles, and of course, its campaign story mode.
42. Overwatch
The class-based shooter that took the world by storm in 2016 is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. Blizzard hit it out of the park with this one, and are hoping with the professional Overwatch League that they can one of the, if not the, premiere esport in the world.
43. Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is one of the most emotionally powerful games in the long running series, sending the player character on a quest to find their lost son. As you would expect, Fallout 4 features a huge open world with hundreds of hours worth of side activities to distract you from that main quest. Plus as an added bonus, the Xbox One version features stronger mod support than the PS4 version.
44. Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III caps off one of the most beloved and simultaneously hated (at least by those that can’t handle the extreme difficulty) series of all time in an epic way. Whether you’re wrapped up in the series already from the first two games, want to experience a challenge, or just want to see what all the fuss is about, Dark Souls III is worth playing through.
45. Forza Motorsport 7
Originally thought of by some fans as just the Xbox’s racer to compete with Sony’s Gran Turismo, the Forza series is without a doubt a top tier racing franchise that consistently puts out high quality entries on a regular basis. The most recent entry, Forza Motorsport 7, continues this trend.
46. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Although re-released and ported more times then we can keep track of, there’s a good reason for it. TES V: Skyrim is one of the best games of this decade, and if you haven’t played it yet, it’s one of the best games you can own on Xbox One.
47. Grand Theft Auto V
Although initially released for last-gen consoles, the Xbox One version features upgraded visuals, a first-person mode, and of course, the extremely popular GTA Online multiplayer mode.
48. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Not only is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, one of the best RPGs on the Xbox One, it’s arguably one of the greatest games of this generation. You don’t need to have played the other two games, just jump in and experience one of the best open-world RPG experiences of all-time.
49. The Division 2
The Division 1 struggled out of the gates but Ubisoft got its act together by the end of that game’s lifespan. With The Division 2 they got it right at launch and released what can be considered the most complete and well-put together looter-shooters this generation featuring a modern/realistic setting; a stark contrast to Destiny 2’s sci-fi take on our solar system.
50. NieR Automata
Although it took a bit longer to reach the Xbox One, thankfully for JRPG fans it did eventually get to Microsoft’s home console. NieR: Automata is among the best JRPGs of this generation. It sports polished action RPG combat, an emotional storyline that can spin-off into a variety of different directions, and a S-Tier soundtrack.
