In 2013, a Rockstar Newswire post hinted at an expansion to the single player mode of Grand Theft Auto V. The post said 2014 would bring “substantial additions” for the game’s three protagonists. A new interview with Rockstar North may confirm that this expansion never existed.
Rockstar North’s Director of Design Imran Sarwar recently spoke to IGN about the future of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online. According to him, the success of GTA Online has changed the studio’s development plans drastically.
Every key member of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V has worked on every aspect of GTA Online, from all content through Heists, and now to these latest updates. GTA Online has proven too interesting and too important to be separate from the main mission of the entire team.
PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 users are up to date on GTA Online for now, but further expansions are unlikely to come to these consoles due to memory restrictions.
Rockstar Games aren’t unfamiliar with adding expansions to their massive open-world titles. Red Dead Redemption added the well-received zombie expansion Undead Nightmare. The previous Grand Theft Auto game added The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which included new playable characters with their own unique campaigns and mechanics.
It seems that this won’t happen for Grand Theft Auto V, as Sarwar has essentially confirmed that no one at the company is developing single player content.
Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations. We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity.
The recently confirmed Freemode events will add more variety to the game and Sarwar also hints at apartment customization in the interview. But fans looking to continue the adventures of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor might not get their wish.
What do you think about this news? Were you looking forward to an expansion on par with The Ballad of Gay Tony or are you happy playing GTA Online for the foreseeable future? Let us know in the comments.
