Elite: Dangerous had taken fans of space simulation by storm on PC, racking up a healthy amount of sales while still bringing in new buyers every day. Creators Frontier Developments have even started to add more content to the game with activities like community-funded space stations all the way to the upcoming multiplayer element Wings. To throw even more on their plate, Frontier Developments and Microsoft revealed at GDC15 that Elite: Dangerous will be coming to Xbox One.
There’s no release date set down for the arrival of Elite’s latest entry but it does raise something particularly interesting for the future. No Man’s Sky is coming as a PlayStation 4 timed exclusive and Star Citizen will be sat comfortably in its own exclusive corner on PC. That means that in this three way space-sim war, Elite: Dangerous will effectively be sat on two fronts all by itself for an as yet unknown amount of time. This space race is hotting up a little.
Those concerned about the game being watered down for Xbox One have even been silenced in some way by CEO David Braben of Frontier had this to say on the Elite: Dangerous forums:
“Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One will be the complete and authentic Elite: Dangerous experience. It will not be “dumbed down”. We’ll be working with an all-new audience, but that doesn’t mean a change in direction for the game, and nor does it mean slowing development on the PC version.”
As part of this post Braben also says that Elite: Dangerous players on Xbox One and PC will “share the same overarching narrative and galaxy state.” Now don’t read that the wrong way. They aren’t planning to make the game’s servers cross platform affairs, just that the game will have the same narrative developments on both systems.
