Stardew Valley Shad Guide: Where to Catch This River Fish and How to Use It

Be sure to bring an umbrella.

If you have ever been one fish away from finishing the Community Center only to realize it is the middle of a sunny Summer and you forgot the Shad, I know exactly how you feel. I have spent many rainy days in Pelican Town specifically hunting for this fish.

It is not the rarest catch in the world, but if you do not know the specific windows for it to appear, it can be a real headache. With the massive Stardew Valley 1.6 update adding new ways to get items, there is even more to know about this little green river dweller. I will walk you through my favorite spots to cast your line and how you can make the most of every Shad you reel in.

When and where I go to catch Shad

The most important thing I have learned is that the Shad is a rain fish. If the sun is out, you are probably just going to catch a lot of trash and some Sunfish. You need to wait for a rainy day during the Spring, Summer, or Fall.

Here are the specific requirements you need to meet:

  • Season: Spring, Summer, and Fall.
  • Time: 9:00 AM to 2:00 AM.
  • Weather: Rain.

When it starts pouring, I usually head to one of two spots. First, I like the river running right through Pelican Town, especially the area near the Blacksmith. If the town is too crowded, I walk down to Cindersap Forest. I have found that casting into the widest parts of the river right in front of Leah’s house is a gold mine for Shad.

If you are playing on the new Meadowlands Farm map, you actually have a 70 percent chance to catch town river fish right on your property, which makes grabbing a Shad much easier without leaving home.

Using the 1.6 update to your advantage

One of my favorite new features in the 1.6 update is that your pet cat can actually gift you a Shad once you reach max friendship. It is a nice little morning surprise that can save you a trip to the river.

There are also new Fish Frenzies that can happen randomly. If you see a notification that a Shad frenzy has started in the river, drop everything and go there. You will see fish literally jumping out of the water, and you can catch them back-to-back with almost no wait time.

If you are in the late game and have unlocked the Mastery Cave in Cindersap Forest, you can pick up the Advanced Iridium Rod. This rod is a game changer because it lets you use two bobbers at once. I like to use a Quality Bobber and a Trap Bobber to make catching Iridium quality Shad a breeze.

Most people just want the Shad for the Community Center. You will need one for the River Fish Bundle in the Fish Tank. If you are playing with remixed bundles, keep an eye out for the Quality Fish Bundle, which might ask for a Gold or Iridium quality Shad.

Beyond the bundles, here is how I usually use them:

  • Selling for profit: A base quality Shad sells for 60g, but if you have the Angler profession, that goes up to 90g. If you manage to get an Iridium one with the Angler bonus, you are looking at 180g.
  • Cooking recipes: Shad works for any recipe that needs any fish, like Sashimi, Maki Rolls, or even Quality Fertilizer.
  • Tailoring: You can take one to Emily’s sewing machine to craft a dyeable Fish Shirt.
  • Gifting: To be honest, I would avoid giving Shad as a gift. Most people like Willy or Linus are just neutral about it, but Haley and Pierre actually hate it.

Setting up a Shad fish pond

If you do not want to wait for rain every time you need a fish, I recommend building a Fish Pond from Robin. Shad will reproduce in a pond every two days. They produce Green Shad Roe, which you can put into a Preserves Jar to make Aged Roe.

To keep your Shad happy and growing in the pond, they might ask you for a few items:

  • For the first few fish: 3 Acorns, 10 Bug Meat, 3 Maple Seeds, or 3 Pine Cones.
  • To get up to seven fish: 3 Gold Ore, 1 Maple Syrup, or 5 Mixed Seeds.
  • For a full pond of ten: 1 Crayfish, 1 Honey, 2 Jade, or 1 Periwinkle.

For more help with your farm, you should make sure you know how to get a duck feather or how to use a slime hutch to keep your farm running smoothly.
