When Does Barbie Release in Theaters?

With the announcement of a brand new Barbie movie, many fans are asking the question: when does Barbie release in theaters? After what seems like almost an eternity, our beloved fashion doll is getting her first live-action film and will feature Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as her male partner Ken.

Barbie Release Date in Theaters

Barbie will be making her big-screen debut in U.S. theaters on July 21, 2023, which is still pretty far away. The development for the movie began all the way back in 2014 at Sony Pictures, but things didn’t go as expected. The movie went through several writers and director changes and even the casting of two different actresses to play the title character. 

However, nothing came to fruition. After Sony’s option expired the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures. The new Barbie movie is being directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay written by herself and Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie, who is well-known for her role as Harley Quinn was cast in 2019 as the lead actress and also serves as a producer under LuckyChap Entertainment alongside Mattel Films and Heyday Films. 

A first-look image was shared of Robbie in a pink convertible, with a big smile on her face and wearing a polka dot headband behind the wheel. The upcoming Barbie movie is one of multiple Mattel properties that are in the pipeline for feature adaptation. Several projects based on the magic 8 ball, Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and others are all being worked upon.
