Do You Have to Buy Overwatch 2 If You Purchased Overwatch?

Lower barrier to entry for everyone.

With Overwatch 2’s closed PvP beta launching this week, we’re starting to see quite a bit of buzz surrounding this game yet again. Because of that, some players might be wondering if you have to buy Overwatch 2 if you’ve already purchased the first Overwatch.

While the game’s pricing details haven’t been finalized just yet, we’ll try to answer that question as best as we can.

Do You Have to Buy Overwatch 2 If You Have Overwatch?

Again, Blizzard hasn’t revealed the full pricing details for the game, but they have announced that Overwatch 2 will be going free-to-play when it launches in Oct. 2022 which means that you do not need to buy the game. This means that whether you have the original game or not, you will not have to pay to access the new PvP content.

During the Overwatch 2: Reveal Event on June 16, 2022, the developers also stated that the game was designed to be a social experience. As such, they didn’t want to limit the people that could play the next one by tying it to the original.

This is great news for players who did not play the first game and are looking to check out this one, as the barrier of entry has been lowered significantly.

All players will have access to the new heroes and maps without having to pay, so your PvP experience won’t be affected. That being said, Blizzard has yet to clarify is the PvE content is included in this free-to-play model as well. The company had previously stated that only the PvP modes would be free to all, and that the PvE content would be paid. With the new free-to-play model, that could include PvE as well.

Of course, you won’t be able to use any of the new skins, emotes, or other new cosmetics added to the game so that’s something to consider.

So to sum up, if you have no interest whatsoever in the PvE missions and story content, you don’t have to buy Overwatch 2. If you’d like to see what you’re missing out on, you’ll have to make the jump eventually.

That’s all you need to know about whether you have to buy Overwatch 2 if you’ve purchased Overwatch. Be sure to search for Twinfinite for more tips and information on the game.
