With the sheer amount of video game adaptations being bandied about in Hollywood, it’s kind of amazing how well the Blue Blur’s first outing did both critically and commercially. Yes, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a surprise hit netting an impressive $319.7 million at the global box office from an estimated $85 million budget. Not too shabby, eh?
But with its sequel locked in to launch shortly, a live-action series in the works, a rumored Tails spin-off on the cards, and with a third film officially confirmed to be in the pipeline as well, some of you may be wondering what the SCU is. Worry not, as we’re here to help. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is the Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Universe (SCU)?
Much akin to the popular MCU acronym, aka the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the SCU is essentially a playful reference to that. In essence, the SCU stands for the Sonic Cinematic Universe, and is a trendy umbrella term that encompasses the entire cast of characters featured in all of the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
The term was coined by the producer, Toby Ascher, who said in a set of production notes for the Blue Hedgehog’s sequel:
We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe. We knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world.
In a nutshell, the SCU is a shorthand term that covers all the characters from the Spiky Speedster’s cinematic franchise: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Doctor Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik, and Longclaw.
Going forward, there’ll likely be many more intriguing characters to add to the list — I mean, Honey The Cat and Sticks The Badger have got to show up at some point, right?
So, there you have it. We hope this helped clue you in on what the SCU is. For more on the Blue Blur, make sure to search for Twinfinite.
