The Promise
After you meet up with Nikki and talk to her for a second in Chapter 8, Peter and the rest of the Guardians will be transported into their own dream worlds known as The Promise. Each of these worlds take them to a place where what they want most is fulfilled.
For Peter Quill, this means getting to not only see and be with his mother, but also having all of his friends come live with him at the farmhouse he grew up on. It isn’t long into the dream that the edges of the screen start to close in with a black substance.
No matter what you do, the blackness will consume the screen and the credits will roll. While the credits are rolling, you’ll be given the choice to Accept the Promise or Rethink it.
How to Reject the Promise & Break Free in Guardians of the Galaxy
When you’re given the choice to Accept or Rethink, choose the Rethink option. This transports Peter right back to when he first sees his mother at the start of the dream. She will again hug him, but this time you’ll have the opportunity to break free.
Push on the left thumbstick a couple of times and Peter will push his mother off and tell her to stop hugging him. He then has to aim with L2 and shoot the apparition of his mother by pressing R2. Shoot the fake mama Quill a couple of times and you’ll have successfully rejected the promise in Guardians of the Galaxy.
