What Are Fortnite Cosmic Chests?

Cosmic Chests are a new type of container that spawns on the map during the first three zones.

When opened, Cosmic Chests drop Alien Artifacts, as well as one of the following weapon type pairs:

  • SMGs and Pistols
  • Heavy Assault Rifles and Scars
  • Desert Eagles and Snipers
  • Pump Shotguns and Tactical Shotguns

The rarity of any weapons that drop from Fortnite Cosmic Chests has a high chance of being Epic (purple) or Legendary (gold), so it’s recommended you hunt these chests down to give yourself the best possible loadout for the match.

Finding Cosmic Chests

Cosmic Chests can be found at the beginning of a Duos, Trios or Squads match. They do not spawn in solos as you’ll need more than one person to open them.

According to dataminer HYPEX, Cosmic Chests spawn in the first three zones after a few seconds delay. They also feature in Competitive playlists, so keep this in mind.

The easiest way to find Cosmic Chests is to find a UFO and fly it around with your teammate standing on the top. Fly low to the ground, and when you see a purple diamond with an ‘!’ in the middle appear on-screen, you know you’re close to either a Cosmic Chest or an Alien Artifact.

We’ve also marked all known Fortnite Cosmic Chest spawn locations on the map below:

  • Road leading north from Dirty Docks
  • On the snowy mountain southeast of Retail Row
  • Southeast of Misty Meadows

  • West of Weeping Woods

Opening Cosmic Chests in Fortnite

Once you’ve found a Cosmic Chest, you and your teammates need to stand next to it. When you do, a tether will attach one of your teammates to the purple diamond encasing the chest and a hit marker will appear on it in a specific area.

The player who was tethered to the Cosmic Chest must then hit the marker/ weak spot, and nowhere else on the chest. After you’ve done this, the chest will link to someone else, and you’ll need to repeat the process. Keep on doing this and, eventually, the Cosmic Chest will open.
