How to Fix Incompatible Version Error in Valheim
The first thing you’re going to want to do is make sure that your game is up to date. Head to your Steam library, right click on Valheim, and select Properties. Then, select Updates and download one if there is one available.

- First, make sure you’ve backed up your save game data by copying the whole ‘Valheim/savedata’ folder and saving it somewhere else on your system.
- Then, you’ll need to install SteamCMD to update the server.
- Create a folder for the server and a file called “update.bat” in it, and then open up the file in Notepad.
- You’ll then need to paste the right info into the file, which is: C:\SteamCMD\steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:\Valheim +app_update 896660 validate +exit
- Save what you just created and run it to update the server.
- You’ll then be able to bring the savedata folder back to the Valheim folder and start the game up. The server and game should then be compatible again.
