How to Upgrade Weapons in Cyberpunk 2077

To start, it’s worth mentioning that you can technically upgrade weapons in Cyberpunk 2077 as soon as you complete the introductory segment.

Following the tutorial, you’ll be given control of your character in full. This means you can access their inventory, swap out their gear and upgrade your weapons via the proper menus.

These are accessed by pressing the Touchpad on PlayStation consoles or the Menu button on Xbox consoles. This will open up your character menu. From there, scroll over to the left to select the Crafting menu. Then, move your cursor over to the Upgrades tab and select it with the X or A button.

This will move you to the Upgrade menu, from which you can use resources to upgrade your weapons and gear.

The gear you have that can be upgraded will be shown on the left, and you can view how much your weapon of choice will be improved by on the right side of the screen; as well as the number of resources you’ll need to do so, which are shown to the left of the upgrade stats.

Speaking of which: The resources you’ll need to have will vary based on the rarity of the gear you’re upgrading. Common weapons, like the one shown above, will require basic and easy to get materials. Rarer gear, on the other hand, will require materials you might not come across as quickly and easily.

Regardless of what you need though, these materials can typically be acquired by looting dead enemies or containers scattered throughout Cyberpunk 2077’s world.

These lootables are fairly easy to come by too, so you won’t have to worry about doing too much grinding for materials so long as you’re scavenging diligently.

Once you know which weapon you want to upgrade – and you’re sure you have enough resources to upgrade it – simply move the cursor over it, select it with the X or A button and then move the cursor down to the confirmation box at the bottom right corner of the screen. You’ll then be the proud owner of a stronger variant of said weapon.

If you’re looking to keep a steady pace with the game’s enemies, then it’s recommended you upgrade your gear whenever possible. Doing so will ensure you always have weapons which can take out enemies fairly easily, and that you won’t be overwhelmed by more difficult missions or bosses.

However, if you’re willing to risk being under-prepped for a bit, saving your resources for upgrading the game’s rarer weapons is also an option.

Doing so may leave you under-equipped in the short-term, but can also lead to you having a vastly overpowered weapon for a later stretch of the game once you get your hands on a rare firearm with additional abilities.
