Black Ops Cold War: How to Get the Sledgehammer

In this guide, we’ll talk you through how to get the new Sledgehammer in Black Ops Cold War’s multiplayer. Unlike the Groza and MAC-10, the Sledgehammer isn’t unlocked via the Season 1 Battle Pass, but instead by completing a rather tricky challenge.

The Sledgehammer can be unlocked by killing two or more players rapidly using the combat knife in 15 different matches.

Doing this will complete the challenge and the Sledgehammer will then be made available under the ‘Melee Weapons’ category when selecting your weapons in Create-a-Class.

How to Unlock the Sledgehammer Quickly

Getting combat knife kills isn’t always the easiest thing to do, especially when you’re playing on some of Black Ops Cold War’s larger maps. As such, you’ll want to instead jump into the Nuketown Holiday 24/7 playlist available to you on the ‘Play’ screen.

The Nuketown Holiday map is a festive variation of the classic, small map that’s featured in Black Ops games since the very first. Because of its small size, it makes it very easy to quickly rack up kills.

It also makes it a lot easier to creep up on enemy players and get close to them so you can use your combat knife, without being gunned down first. In other words, it’s the perfect map to play to unlock the Sledgehammer in Black Ops Cold War.

In addition to playing on Nuketown Holiday 24/7, you’ll want to make sure that your Combat Knife class has perks that compliment your up-close-and-personal playstyle.

For this, we recommend the ‘Perk Greed’ wildcard, as this allows you to equip two perks from each perk category. With this equipped, go ahead and pick the following perks:

  • Paranoia
  • Forward Intel
  • Assassin
  • Tracker
  • Ghost
  • Ninja

Paranoia will alert you to enemies targeting you, allowing you to make evasive moves and cheat death, while Forward Intel shows you indicators for enemy reinforcements and increases the size of your minimap. This gives you an idea of where to avoid, and the increased minimap works perfectly with a Spy Plane to help you hunt down enemies with your combat knife.

Tracker is a key perk to have, as it shows imprints of enemy footsteps. Finally, Ghost makes you undetectable from enemy Spy Planes when you’re moving, while Ninja makes you move more quietly. These are perfect for catching your opponent’s off-guard.

That’s all you need to know to get the Sledgehammer in Black Ops Cold War. For more tips and tricks on Black Ops Cold War Season 1. Head over to our guide wiki, or check out more of our coverage below.
