Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: How to Parry

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Ever since Origins, Assassin’s Creed has transitioned from an action game to an action role-playing game. That has meant new progression mechanics and a complete overhaul of its combat system. Still, the practice of parrying, which was such a big part of Assassin’s Creed games of old, is just as important as ever. Here’s how to parry in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

How to Parry in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Parrying isn’t particularly difficult in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and it’s actually something you’re taught right from the very start of the game. All you need to do is press L1 (PS4) or the equivalent button on your platform (likely LB on Xbox, and X on PC).

However, the tricky part isn’t remembering the button prompt but ensuring that you time it properly. You need to make sure you’re hitting the button just before the enemy attacks, and that you’re attempting to parry an attack that’s actually parriable in the first place.

So what do we mean by “parriable?” Well, enemies in Valhalla have three different types of attacks: standard, a yellow special attack, and then a red special attack.

In our experience, the red attack is the only one that you simply can’t parry no matter how well you time it. These attacks need to be dodged at all costs, especially since they tend to do the most damage.

For every other attack, you just need to time the action correctly. You can, of course, keep hammering the parry button to maximize your chances of pulling one off.

Those who really like using the mechanic should consider using a shield, too, since even if you mistime the parry, you’re at least likely to block incoming damage at the very least. It’s not necessary to use a shield to parry, though; dual-wielders and those who favor two-handed weapons can parry just as well.

That should be everything you need to know about how to parry in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. For more useful tips and information on the game, check out Twinfinite’s handy guide wiki.
