How to Swim in The Last of Us 2

To swim in The Last of Us 2, all you need to do is go ahead and jump into the water and use the left analog stick to swim around on the surface.

This is a major change from the first game, where Ellie couldn’t swim and was afraid of water. A lot of the puzzles in the original Last of Us revolved around the player controlling Joel and moving palettes on water to get Ellie from one side to the other.

In The Last of Us 2, the first time we’re introduced to the swimming mechanics, Joel pushes Ellie into the water jokingly and they have a laugh about how she’s improving and getting better with swimming and her strokes.

How to Dive Underwater

Once you’re in the water, simply press and hold the Circle button to dive under the surface of the water. While you’re underwater, simply use the left analog stick to swim in the direction you want to go.

You’ll need to look out for the gauge on the right-hand side of the screen that indicates how long Ellie can hold her breath for underwater. If this runs out before you get back to the surface, Ellie will die and you’ll need to start again from the next checkpoint.

When you’re ready to come back up to the surface, simply press and hold X and you’ll find Ellie swimming back up to the surface.

That should be all you need to know about swimming in The Last of Us 2. For more tips, tricks, and guides, be sure to check out our ever-expanding guide wiki.
