PSO2: How to Unlock & Equip Subclass

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Phantasy Star Online 2 has finally arrived in the west after years and years of pleading and sacrificing Rappy effigies to Sega. OK maybe just me on that last one, but you’re welcome. Anyway, if you’re here, you’re probably wondering how to unlock your subclass in PSO2. Let’s break down everything you need to know.

Unlocking Your Subclass in PSO2

Your subclass is a second class that you can add alongside your main class and you can gain EXP for it at the same time as your main. This allows you to not only multi-task leveling up to a certain level, but also utilize stats and photon art skills from that subclass to enhance your gameplay.

Obviously, this is extremely important as it maximizes the DPS that you can do, so you’re not going to want to waste any time unlocking your subclass. However, you can’t unlock your subclass in PSO2 right away.

Complete the Quest from Cofy

First, you have to hit level 20 in any class in PSO2 and then go speak to Administrator Cofy at the East Quest Counter. You should be somewhat familiar with Cofy by now as she frequently offers you important trials and license quests that are practically mandatory.

What Cofy is going to ask you to do is defeat two enemies, Garango and Fordodan. The simplest way to knock these out is simply to complete free field missions from the quest counter until you encounter them. You could alternatively also do Ark Quests as well.

The Garango can be found on Forest Free Field maps, while the Fordodan can be found on Volcanic Cavern Free Field maps. Note that they aren’t as common as your average enemy but you will eventually encounter them if you keep clearing out enemies.

Once you’ve killed both of those enemies, return to Cofy and complete the quest. You’ll now have your subclasses unlocked in PSO2.

How to Unlock & Equip Subclass in PSO2

  1. Get to level 20 on any class

  2. Kill a Garango and Fordodan

Located in the Forest and Volcanic Cavern fields respectively.

  3. Return to Cofy

  4. Select your PSO2 subclass at the class counter.

Equipping Your Subclass

Now that you have completed Cofy’s subclass quest, return to the class counter. Hit Change Class, and now, since you’re all done with the quest, the ability to select and change your subclass will be opened up. You can select any class that you have unlocked so far.

We’ll have a more in-depth subclass guide, going over what subclass you should pick, as we have more time with PSO2 and get a sense of the endgame NA meta.

However, for now, the basic advice we can offer would be to select subclasses that enhance and synergize with your main class in a logical way.

For example, Force/Techer, the two primary Tech-based classes, support each other in obvious ways. It’s giving you more access to tech-based Photon Arts that are enhanced by your innate high-tech stats. Hunter/Fighter is another one that gives you full access to a wide range of close-range weaponry and abilities. Same idea with Ranger/Hunter.

That’s all you need to know for how to unlock and equip your subclass in PSO2. For more tips, tricks, and FAQs answered about Phantasy Star Online 2 check our archives of guides, features and news.
