If you knew nothing about these skills before now you’re going to be an expert thanks to this guide and the simplified systems this generation. Here how to get Egg Moves & pass them down in Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Pokemon Sword & Shield: How to Get Egg Moves & Pass Them Down

In past Pokemon games, the main way of getting creatures with Egg Moves was through breeding. All the way back to the third-gen games there have been ways to obtain wild Pokemon with theses skills, yet they aren’t easily found.

Pokemon Sword & Shield adds some big quality of life upgrades that makes getting Egg Moves onto your Pokemon a much easier process. The first that you’ll likely encounter in the game is the Brilliant Aura.

How to Get Egg Moves

Sometimes when you’re roaming around searching for Pokemon to catch you might see a golden aura surrounding one of those creatures. This is known as Brilliant Aura. You can check out more about that here.

This indicates two things: The Pokemon will have three perfect IVs and that they’ll also have one Egg Move. This is the only way that you can find a wild Pokemon with one of these skills. Your next option is to go to the Daycare.

How to Pass Down Egg Moves

The good old fashioned way of passing down Egg Moves still exists in Pokemon Sword & Shield, but there’s a new mechanic that makes it much easier granted you already have a creature with one of these moves.

First, we’ll start out with breeding for an Egg Move. Every Pokemon that can hatch from an egg has a predetermined list of attacks that it can learn from one of its parents.

A simple example of this is if you breed a Pikachu or Raichu with a Meowth or one of its evolutions that currently has the move Flail, then the child Pichu will have the move Flail when it hatches (Bulbapedia).

This handing down of moves can also happen when a parent has a TM move that the child can also learn. This isn’t a part of the regular Egg Moves list, but it’s just another way to pass down skills from parent to child.

Lastly, the new way of teaching Egg Moves to a Pokemon is through the Pokemon Daycare. This method is quite unique since it doesn’t even require the creation of an egg at all.

All you need to do is put two Pokemon of the same species into the Daycare together. One needs to have an Egg Move, and the other can only have three learned moves to make room for the new skill.

Luckily, you can easily make room for these new skills by making your Pokemon forget moves. All you need to do is talk to the man behind the left counter in any Pokemon Center.

That’s all there is to know about how to get Egg Moves & pass them down in Pokemon Sword and Shield. If you need help with any other aspect of these games, then just check out our Sword & Shield Guide Wiki.
