Death Stranding: How to Get Chiral Crystals & What They Do

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Death Stranding is almost the very definition of a walking simulator, as you’ll spend the majority of the game doing fetch quests, and hiking from one place to another. Occasionally you’ll engage in a bit of light combat, but that’s about it. Along the way, you might come across strange chiral crystals that you can’t seem to pick up. Here’s how to get and use chiral crystals in Death Stranding.

How to Get Chiral Crystals and What They Do in Death Stranding

During the first two chapters of Death Stranding, as you’re hiking across the eastern front of the United Cities of America, you might come across golden rock formations on the ground.

When you approach them, you’ll see a prompt to hold the square button to pick them up, but the game won’t actually let you do so. This is because you need a special piece of equipment to do that.

All you have to do is just follow the main story quests until you approach the end of chapter 2, where you’ll be informed that you need a special cylinder to pick up the chiral crystals. Once you obtain the cylinder, you can simply head over to the crystals, hold the square button and pick them up.

Chiral crystals can typically be found in wet or rainy areas, and you’ll usually see small floating rock formations near where they are.

Recycling Them and What They Do

Just like metals and resins, chiral crystals are essentially materials used for crafting and fabrication. What you’ll want to do is head to any delivery terminal, choose the Recycle option, and then choose to recycle your chiral crystals.

This will allow you to store chiral crystals in the resource reserves of that outpost you’re visiting, and then use those materials to fabricate any equipment that you may need. Of course, do note that the reserves are separate between each outpost, so don’t go crazy and dump everything you have into one outpost.

To recap, here’s how to get and use chiral crystals in Death Stranding:

  1. Towards the end of chapter 2, you’ll get a special cylinder that lets you pick up chiral crystals.

  2. Walk over to the crystals and hold the square button to pick them up.

  3. Recycle them at any outpost, and they can be used as materials for crafting and equipment fabrication.

That’s all you need to know about how to get and use chiral crystals in Death Stranding. Be sure to check our Death Stranding guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.
