Custom Tactics allow you to change how aggressive your play is, where your team is set up on the pitch, and what roles each of your players have.

As long as you have them set up before the game, you can quickly switch between tactical approaches using the d-pad to impact the game.

There are five settings that you can alter, allowing you to be prepared for when you’re under pressure and need to push up the field, or when you need to put intense pressure on your opponent’s back four.

How to Change Custom Tactics in FIFA 20

If you’re playing offline, in whatever mode, you just need to do it in the Team Management section before the game starts, or pause the game to access it from there.

In Ultimate Team though, it’s a little more complex. First, you need to be on the Squad Screen, looking at your team.

From there, press L2 to bring up the Squad Actions, and select Custom Tactics. This will bring up the menu that allows you to change them, with Player Instructions, Roles, and Tactics all available for five sets of tactics.

To change which tactic you want to set, just press R2 and select between Ultra-Defensive, Defensive, Balanced, Attacking, and Ultra Attacking. They all have pre-set options to match their name, but you can change everything if you want.

In short,

  1. If you’re playing offline, you can set them up via the Team Management menu before or during matches.

  2. In Ultimate Team, head to your squad, press L2, and select Custom Tactics to change them.
