Getting New Tracks

Stars are currently the only means of unlocking more tracks in Mario Kart Tour. That’s simple enough, but earning the stars isn’t always as easy. These stars are not an in-game currency, they’re more of a collectible. Think power moons from Mario Odyssey. You keep a running total and more cups are unlocked as your star total increases.

Each cup has a set number of stars so you know exactly how well you need to do in order to unlock the next bunch of races.

Earning Stars

You can earn these stars by performing well in races. You receive a total score at the end of the race which is based upon your finishing position, the character you picked, the kart you picked, the glider you picked, how many boosts you got, and how many hits you landed on opponents. The more points you earn in a Mario Kart Tour race, the more stars you will unlock.

There are typically five point thresholds that align with the number of stars you’ll earn. Reach the top spot and you’ll earn yourself five stars. There are also short levels that almost act as tutorials for different maneuvers which will net you three stars if completed successfully.

If you fail to earn five stars the first time you complete a race, you’ll still be able to pick up a few more by going to that track again. However, you can only ever get five stars per course. This means if you get four stars on a course you still can earn one more star by going back to that track and getting a higher score.
