Can You Get the Moonlight Greatsword in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice? What You Need to Know

Recommended Videos

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has arrived on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, bringing FromSoftware’s latest grueling RPG to our screens. As you’d expect, it shares a lot in common with the Dark Souls series, and even Bloodborne, too. As such, some players may be wondering if the Moonlight Greatsword is in Sekiro, too. Here’s what you need to know.

Is the Moonlight Sword in Sekiro?

Unfortunately, no. The Moonlight Greatsword does not appear in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This was confirmed by Game Director and company president Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with GameInformer.

When asked whether the Moonlight Greatsword would be making an appearance in Sekiro, Miyazaki laughed and said “Not this time.”

Why Is the Moonlight Greatsword Such a Big Deal?

For those wondering exactly what the Moonlight Greatsword is and why people are so interested in it appearing in Sekiro, let us explain. Simply put, the Moonlight Greatsword initially appeared as “one of the rare dragon weapons, came from the tail of Seath the Scaleless, the pale white dragon who betrayed his own” in Dark Souls.

Since, it’s become almost a running-joke in FromSoftware titles, popping up in Dark Souls 2, 3, and Bloodborne respectively. Alas, if Miyazaki wasn’t trying to pull a fast one on us, the running joke has come to a stop in Sekiro. However, as pointed out by fans on Reddit, chances are that it was getting a little too complicated both in terms of lore and gameplay to have this weapon cropping up in different worlds and so on.

While you might not be able to get your hands on the Moonlight Greatsword in Sekiro right now, there’s always the chance it’ll pop up in future FromSoftware titles to bring the joke back from the brink of death.
