This Fortnite guide will run you through how to get Buried Treasure maps, how to find buried treasure, and what loot you can get inside.

The Fortnite update v8.01 that dropped today added in Buried Treasure to the Battle Royale game mode. Keeping to the Pirate theme of the current Season, Buried Treasure essentially tasks players with seeking the chest and getting some incredibly powerful loot in return.

So What Is This New Item?

Buried Treasure is actually the name of the treasure map item you’ll pick up in Fortnite. It has a legendary rarity, so won’t drop all that often, and you can only hold one map at a time, so no hoarding them and giving yourself the ultimate loadout.

How to Get the Buried Treasure Maps in Fortnite

Buried Treasure maps can only be obtained as floor loot or from your average chest in Fortnite. You won’t be nabbing these out of a vending machine or in supply drops.

However, there’s always the chance you could get one off an eliminated enemy, so be sure to keep that in mind. We found a number of players running aimlessly around in search of Buried Treasure in Fortnite, and managed to nab one or two this way.

Where to Find the Treasure Chest

Once you’ve got the Buried Treasure map in Fortnite, there’s not a whole lot you need to do to actually pinpoint its location. Simply ensure you’ve got it equipped in your inventory, and the game will provide a glowing orange beacon, as shown in the screenshot below (thanks to Reddit user TimSad for the footage).

You’ll also see a little blocky line appear when you stand still, pointing you in the direction you’ll want to head in. When you finally arrive at the spot, you should see a large black X on the floor, just as you can see in the screenshot below. Now, just get out your Pickaxe and start going to town on the ‘X’ on the ground.

Slowly but surely, you’ll begin digging up the buried chest in Fortnite. Once the chest is entirely out of the ground, you’ll then be able to open it up just as you would any other in the game.

All that Epic shared with us from the patch notes for the Fortnite v8.01 update was that it’d contain a “trove of legendary loot.” From the few we’ve got, this seems true. We got at least two gold weapons, as well as some ammo and a Chug Jug.

Again, as you can see in the screenshot, user TimSad nabbed themselves a Chug Jug, legendary Pump Shotgun, and legendary Suppressed Assault Rifle to boot.

Outside of that, there’s not a whole lot else you need to know about Fortnite Buried Treasure. For more tips, tricks, and guides on everything in the current season, be sure to check out our Fortnite Season 8 guide wiki.
