Which Characters You Start With In Smash Bros Ultimate

Recommended Videos

Super Smash Bros Ultimate finally brings Nintendo’s most famous party game to the Switch, bigger and better than ever before. But if you’re wondering which characters you start with, we’ve got you covered.

In Super Smash Bros, every character that’s ever appeared in the series returns on top of a host of new features and improvements, including reworked Final Smashes and a brand new Adventure Mode called World of Light. Of course, there’s a catch to all of this as you won’t start the game out with the entire roster unlocked.

You’ll actually need to work to unlock the majority of the roster in Smash Bros Ultimate, as you’ll only start the game with eight characters to choose from. This is the starting roster of the original Super Smash Bros, featuring Nintendo’s biggest icons. Before we go on, we should note that you technically start with the Mii Fighters unlocked as well.

If you go the Games & More section and then choose Mii Fighter you can create your own Mii Fighter character, which will subsequently put the option on your roster in every game mode. So basically you just need to make a fighter of each type, and you don’t have to unlock the Mii Fighters like every other character. Now that’s out of the way, here are the eight starting characters in Smash Bros Ultimate.

  • Mario
  • Donkey Kong
  • Link
  • Kirby
  • Samus
  • Pikachu
  • Yoshi
  • Fox

Like we said that’s the starting roster of the original Super Smash Bros, for a nice little shot of nostalgia.

Unlocking Characters

Luckily, Smash Bros Ultimate makes it easy enough to unlock all the other characters in the game. All you need to do is play. You can unlock every character through Adventure Mode, or you’ll get challengers to appear simply by playing any of the game’s various modes. You’ll need to beat that challenger to unlock the specific character, and you can see more on the whole process right here.

That covers which characters you start with in Smash Bros Ultimate. For even more tips, tricks, and guides make sure you take a look at our Smash Bros Ultimate wiki. It’s filled with tips like how to get Spirit Points, and even detailed guides for playing new characters like Ridley.
