If a horse, stagecoach, train, or wagon simply doesn’t cut it for you when it comes to getting around the old west in Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s one final method for getting around. It’s by no means the fastest way to explore the world, and is limited in where it can go, but it’ll definitely come in handy if you want to do a spot of fishing every once in a while. How to Get a Boat in Red Dead Redemption 2

First and foremost, it’s important to note that this isn’t some fancy steamboat or anything. This is a simple rowboat that Arthur can use to navigate bodies of water snaking their way across the world. It’s not exactly the most convenient way to get around as a result, nor particularly fast.

When Do you Need to Use It?

As such, we recommend only really using the boat in Red Dead Redemption 2 for fishing. It makes getting to fishing spots far easier, allowing you to get the larger-sized fish that can be found in the deeper areas of water in the game.

To get a boat in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll need to have advanced in the story a little bit. Specifically, you’ll need to have your gang move their camp from Horseshoe Outlook to the next spot, which we’re not going to spoil for you here.

Once you have, you’ll want to look for the ledger next to the contributions box that you use to donate money to the camp. The ledger is what you use to not only see how much everyone is contributing and where the money is going, but what upgrades are available to you. You can also replenish supplies here for a cost, at the bottom of each respective resources page.

The boat is a camp upgrade that will be unlocked once you reach the second camp in Red Dead Redemption 2. However, be warned that it will cost you $400, so it’s certainly not cheap.

Fortunately, money does get a little easier to come by the more you progress in the story, plus you’ll likely have your preferred money-making methods down to a tee by this point, too. If you do need a hand, though, we’ve got a helpful guide on how to get money fast.

Where to Find the Boat & Use It

Now that you’ve spent your hard-earned cash to buy the boat upgrade at your camp in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll need to track it down. It can be found on the water just next to your camp.

This isn’t too hard to find, simply head over to it and then press Triangle / Y right by it to hop in. Now you can freely move about bodies of water, and get settled in for a nice spot of fishing wherever the mood takes you.

That’s all you need to know for how to get the boat and use it in Red Dead Redemption 2. If you’re looking for some tips on fishing, you can do that here. For more on Rockstar’s latest epic adventure, be sure to check out our ever-expanding Red Dead Redemption 2 guide wiki.
