Monster Hunter: World
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Monster Hunter: World took the world by storm when it launched earlier this year on consoles. The latest entry in the hunting series was a huge step up from its predecessors, offering streamlined gameplay, accessibility, and updated graphics. The game has become so popular that it continues to break boundaries, especially with its upcoming PC release.
Since January, Monster Hunter: World has sold a total of 8.3 million sales, becoming the best-selling game in Capcom’s history. The latest entry in the series is one of the company’s biggest success stories over the recent years, sparking interest and gathering new players worldwide. With the PC version launching in just a few days, we can probably expect another huge boost in sales around the near future or so. We personally loved Monster Hunter: World, and you can check out our review here if you want to learn more about it.
God of War
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Sony has finally brought back God of War after shelving the series for eight whole years. The PS4 installment aimed to mix things up, taking Kratos outside of Greek mythology and injecting some new Norse lore in there for good measure. This time around, he’s joined by his son, Atreus, as the pair set off on a journey to scatter his mother’s ashes on the highest peak of the nine realms.
God of War has always been one of Sony’s best-selling IPs, so it’s no surprise that the reboot has smashed 1 million sales. The game managed to sell a whopping 3.1 million units in just three days and reached that 5 million milestone after the first month of its release. Needless to say, Sony has been more than pleased by the results, recently noting how the sales have exceeded its expectations. We were also big fans of God of War on the PS4, and you can check out our full review here.
Kirby: Star Allies
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Kirby’s back again with yet another game, Star Allies, on the Nintendo Switch. This series has always leaned towards a more child-friendly atmosphere, and the same remains true in his latest quest. This time around, he’s making friends with his enemies by throwing hearts and recruiting them on his adventure.
Aside from his enemies, however, it also seems like Kirby’s won the hearts of his fans (and consumers), racking a total of 1.89 million sales throughout 2018. Kirby: Star Allies was the first major first-party release in 2018, and it turned out to be a big hit in the United States. Apparently, Star Allies had the strongest sales debut in the entire series, even topping Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland by 90 percent. If you’re a big fan of this pink puff, you can check out our review on his latest game here.
Far Cry 5
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
The Far Cry series has made an explosive comeback this year with none other than Far Cry 5. This time around, players got the chance to explore Hope County, Montana – home to beautiful vistas, stunning landscapes, and a deadly cult. Acting as a sheriff, you and your other friends in the game had to stage a revolt against the Project at Eden’s Gate, a bloodthirsty cult spearheaded by megalomaniac Joseph Seed and his fanatical siblings.
Far Cry 5 was a major success when it released earlier this year, selling 2.5 million copies in its first five days. These numbers are a big step up from Primal, which was met with mixed reception yet sold its fair share of copies.
On top of that, Far Cry 5 now represents Ubisoft’s second biggest launch ever, and the company has even released an infographic compiling some interesting tidbits about the game. You can check out our thoughts on Far Cry 5 by reading our full review here.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
The Dragon Ball series is no stranger to fighting games, with titles such as the Xenoverse series under its belt. FighterZ, on the other hand, was Bandai Namco’s take on creating a traditional 2.5D fighting game with unique elements taken from the series. FighterZ offered plenty of fast fights, fan-favorite characters, and plenty of references to both the manga and anime.
The game has been praised for its stunning visuals and fluid gameplay, to the point that it’s become Evo’s highest watched game on Twitch. Its success is unparalleled, becoming the fastest-selling Dragon Ball game, with both shipments and digital sales hitting the 2 million mark a week after its launch. Moreover, Dragon Ball FighterZ surpassed the 2.5 million sales mark back in May, having only launched in January of this year. Bandai Namco continues to support FighterZ with more content through DLC, and it’s even getting ported to the Nintendo Switch later this month. We loved our time with the game, and you can check out our full review here.
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is a strange case. When it launched on the Wii U a few years back, it was met with some mixed responses and shaky scores. Moving on to the Tropical Freeze port, it seems like the game has finally managed to redeem itself on the Nintendo Switch. With the addition of the new Funky Mode, players have found a new way to fly by those difficult platforming levels without completely tearing their hair out.
In fact, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze has become such a big hit on the Nintendo Switch that it has sold 1.40 million copies. Moreover, it was also the best-selling game for May in Japan, even topping Dark Souls: Remastered. If you’re interested in the game, you can check out our full review here for more info.
Detroit: Become Human
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Quantic Dream is at it again with yet another compelling narrative game, Detroit: Become Human. What was once a 2012 demo has evolved into a fully-fledged PlayStation title that has smashed the 1 million record in 2018. Detroit: Become Human has been the fastest Quantic Dream game to sell 1 million copies, after two weeks since its initial launch on the PlayStation 4.
In retrospect, Heavy Rain took five weeks to achieve the same results while Beyond: Two Souls only reached the 1 million mark two months after launch. While Detroit: Become Human hasn’t gotten as much traction as God of War or Horizon Zero Dawn, it still stands as an impressive milestone for the PlayStation community this year. Here’s our full review of the game if you want to learn more.
Octopath Traveler
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Square Enix’s latest game, Octopath Traveler, is a love letter to the JRPG franchise, trading all the flashy graphics and quick time events for 2.5HD sprites and turn-based combat. Here, players will follow the story of eight people, each with their own reasons for embarking on a grand quest that ties them all together. As a traditional JRPG, players will have to manage job classes, skills, and travel to different towns, cities, and kingdoms as they unravel each traveler’s specific story.
While Octopath Traveler only launched last month, the game has already smashed the 1 million milestone. Square Enix hadn’t been expecting the game’s sudden popularity, having apologized about the constant stock shortage. To celebrate the 1 million mark, they’ve recently released some new artwork that seems to be pointing to a possible new entry or port in the Bravely series. If you’re interested in Octopath Traveler, you can read up on our full review here.
Sea of Thieves
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
Pirate games are still a big niche in the gaming scene, so Microsoft and Rare decided to team up and start an ambitious project known as Sea of Thieves. This seafaring exploration game takes you and your friends across the vast ocean as you sail with the hopes of finding treasure and striking it rich. While the game might have turned out differently than what some initially expected, Sea of Thieves has managed to gain a large following.
Evidently enough, the game garnered two million players during its first week after launch. While some might be quick to point out that this may hev been due to its inclusion as part of Microsoft’s Game Pass service, Aaron Greenberg has mentioned that these numbers don’t include the exclusive service. Since last month, Microsoft has revealed that the game now sits with a 5 million player base, coming from both the PC and Xbox One. Although the company hasn’t revealed the total number of units sold, it’s pretty obvious that Sea of Thieves managed to smash the 1 million sales mark. You can check out our full review of Sea of Thieves here if you want to learn more about the game.
Mario Tennis Aces
10 Games That Smashed 1 Million Sales in 2018
The Nintendo Switch has gotten its fair share of exclusives over the past year, from Kirby Star Allies to Octopath Traveler. While we hadn’t gotten another mainline Mario game, the company did release a new sports installment with Mario Tennis Aces. The game added in some mechanics and stages as well as some new faces alongside the same tennis action.
Apart from the court, Mario Tennis Aces also smashed the competition, having racked up 1.38 million sales. The sports spin-off was also the top-selling game of June and bestselling game in Japan for three whole weeks. Tennis Aces has become a smash hit, and you can check out our thoughts on the game here.
