How to Tame a Horse – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Recommended Videos

Unlike previous entries in the Legend of Zelda series, you don’t just get a free horse that you can use to traverse the world. This time in Breath of the Wild, you’ll have to actually tame a wild horse, which requires a calm mind and some stamina.

Horses can be found anywhere in the wild and come in two flavors: gentle and wild (though they’re all wild). Gentle horses are easier to calm and tame, while the more aggressive, wild ones will require lots of stamina.

When you find a horse, simply sneak up on it from behind and mount it, which will trigger the taming part. It will start to go wild and try to buck you off. Simply hold on until it stops. Depending on how wild the horse is, it will eat up a certain amount of stamina. If it requires more stamina than you have, you will be thrown off (sustaining minor injury) and the steed will flee, leaving you to travel Hyrule in Breath of the Wild on foot. If you have food in your inventory, you can use it at this time to calm the horse even faster.

You can actually keep a horse you tame by taking it to a stable and paying 20 Rupees. This will provide a saddle, a bridle, and even let you name it.
