Defend – FIFA 17
A few years ago, EA introduced a new real-time defense mechanic into the FIFA series which completely changed the way playing defensively worked. While it does allow players greater control over proceedings, it also requires you to learn some new skills to ensure you’ve got a solid back line. Here’s how to defend effectively in FIFA 17.
First things first, it’s worth noting that FIFA 17 has brought about a focus on possession and slow build-up soccer. This means that your opponent isn’t always going to go straight for goal, but will instead look to pass it around until the perfect path through your defense opens up. This means the methods of simply charging your opponent down will no longer work effectively when trying to defend.
With that in mind, don’t be tempted to simply bomb-rush the opposition. Sometimes it’s better to use L2/LT to sit back and block off any options the player has. This button also allows you to sidestep while facing your opponent, making it far easier to block any dangerous passes. You can combine this by using L1/LB to have an AI player assist you in dispossessing your opponent. This means the AI player can close down play, while you block off their alternative routes of attack.
If you think it’s possible to do it with just the one player you’re controlling, use X/A to get directly in the line of your opponent. Then, when in position, use L2/LT to contend for the ball. When the perfect time arises, press Circle/B for a standing tackle, or Square/X for a sliding tackle.
Of course, you’re not always going to be able to dispossess your opponent of the ball and in these cases you want to ensure they simply can’t proceed any further into an offensive position, fending them off until the moment to tackle arises. Sometimes dragging your center back over to the left hand-side to close down the attack, as your left back tracks another player is worth sacrificing positioning.
Getting your tackle right is incredibly important if you don’t want to land yourself in even more hot water. A poorly-timed tackle can see the opponent getting a free kick in a dangerous area. Only look to make a tackle when you’re sure it’s going to be clean and you’re not going to take the opposing player out more than getting the ball.
Only if you’re about to concede should you consider resorting to taking out the player and seeking a free kick or penalty just to hold up play and prevent the goal.
