Metal Gear Online is now available for prospective Big Bosses to test their mettle against others vying for the same title. Utilizing all of the amazing gameplay found in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, MGO pits players against one another in various modes that will require different skills and strategies in order to achieve victory. It’s the merging of the awesomeness that is Metal Gear Solid and the frantic nature of multiplayer shooters.

One of the Metal Gear Online modes is called Cloak and Dagger Rush. Players must play as both Defenders and Attackers as they attempt to capture the enemy teams intel. The catch is that the teams are not equal in terms of firepower and abilities. One side has weapons, explosives, and other full on assault capabilities. The other side has nothing but invisibility and tranquilizer pistols. Each must accomplish their objective using only what’s given to them, and it is not easy, at least not to seasoned Snakes.

To make life a bit easier, we’ve broken down both the Defender objective and the Attacker objective separately, so that you are well prepared to utilize each of their abilities and capitalize on their predicaments.

A Stalwart Defense

Metal Gear Online: Cloak and Dagger Rush gives Defenders the task of defending three Data Discs from the opposing team. The Defending team has full use of both tranquilizing rounds and live ammunition to put the Attackers down with extreme prejudice. But, don’t rest easy just because you have explosives and firepower on your side.

The Attackers have stealth on their side, and by that we mean they can render themselves completely invisible. They will use this to flank and take out any of your straggling team members. The best course of action is to move in pairs if you feel that you absolutely must move around. Always make sure that you’re aware of your partner, sometimes you may not spot an enemy quick enough so one of you being tranquilized is a good warning that someone is close by. You are able to wake a tranquilized soldier in Metal Gear Online, just like in the main campaign, but make sure to try and clear the stealthy threat first.

Since they don’t have highly offensive gear, quickly taking cover and scanning the perimeter of your immediate area will often unveil the culprit. If you manage to spot them, they will lose their camouflage, making them visible to your entire team.

Keep in mind that the Attackers don’t actually have to attack you. Cloak and Dagger Rush’s main objective is to protect the three discs, so be sure to make that your top priority. If you happen to be playing a reckless team, then by all means murder them (killing an entire team will end the round), but don’t get fooled enough to leave your Data Disc unprotected.

Eventually, the Attackers will have to come to you since they have no other way to win the round. They may have stealth and invisibility, but Defenders have the advantage of knowing where they have to be in order to win. Never give them an open line of sight to knock you out and you’ll be fine. Just hold your ground and shoot any weird shimmers that move. You’ll be a master of Cloak and Dagger rush in no time.

Attack Without Violence

The other half of Metal Gear Online’s Cloak and Dagger Rush mode are the crafty Attackers. The Attackers may seem like they’re at a disadvantage with their sole offensive capabilities being CQC and tranquilizer darts. But when used properly, they are the most dangerous soldiers on the field, regardless of how many guns and bullets the defenders may have.

The Attackers’ objective is simple, steal one of the three Data Discs being guarded and upload it back at your base. Stealth and speed are the name of the game, and using the offensive nature of the Defenders against them will help you out in the long run.

Although your team is called the Attackers, you don’t have to attack the enemy at all. You only need to steal a disc, and that takes nothing more than the press of a button. Where being part of a pair is super important for the Defenders, it isn’t necessary for Attackers in Metal Gear Online. In fact, moving alone is probably your best bet. If you want to play in pairs though, using one individual as a decoy while the other sneaks in for the steal is a perfect strategy.

You are invisible as long as you aren’t running around. Keep your movements slow and you’ll even be able to sneak right up to a Defender without them being any the wiser. Now you may be tempted to attack, whether by CQC or by using your tranq pistol, but do not do so unless you’re sure they are alone. Your attacks are slower due to the nature of your weapons, so having to deal with more than one enemy at any given time will pretty much always spell disaster for you.

A diversion is a much better tactic than a full on assault. As long as one of you gets close enough to swipe one disc, you’re fine. After that, the Defenders will have to rush to find who stole the missing Data Disc. While they do that, just slowly make your way back to the blue upload area. You only need to be inside of this circle for a few seconds and that’s it, you win Cloak and Dagger Rush, and are one step closer to being a Metal Gear Online master.
