Garry’s Mod: How to Enable Third Person

This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Enabling third person view in Garry’s Mod isn’t difficult, it’s just not always possible. While many of us would love to run around with cameras zoomed out, you’ll need console commands to enter third person mode.

First, you’ll need to enable the console. Head to Options in the main menu and then to Advanced options, where you’ll check mark the box to enable console. Remember to save your settings.

Next, you’ll need the power to use console commands. That means you have to be in a server where you have administrator powers or are a moderator with those privileges. Alternatively, this can be done on a server that allows cheats.

Hit the tilde on your keyboard (it’s the little squiggle: ~) to bring up the console. You’ll then see a prompt, where you can type “sv_cheats 1” and then “thirdperson.” If your server has cheats enabled, you can just type in “thirdperson.” Type all of these without quotation marks, by the way.

The issue is that you need the power to use this command, and many public servers don’t allow sv_cheats. If you’re playing alone, though, you won’t have a problem. Shift that camera into third gear and get back to having fun.
