Emily Wants to Play: How to Survive the Night

Time to play a little game.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Emily Wants to Play is a survival horror video game in the same vein as Five Nights at Freddy’s. The player’s character, a pizza boy on his final delivery of the night, must survive until 6 A.M. That sounds like a simple task, but that’s before you realize that there are three evil dolls and a twisted ghost that really want you to play with them.

Each hour changes the threats you’ll have to deal with, so we’ll help you deal with each individual antagonist. One thing that separates this from a game like Five Nights at Freddy’s is that you have free movement within the house, so no weird grid movements. This will help you out quite a bit when dealing with the nightmares that await you.

Now let’s get started.

11 P.M.

11 P.M. is the time you arrive at the house that will hold you captive for the next few hours. Someone here ordered a pizza but when you arrive you find an empty household full of packed belongings. A sign in the kitchen states that someone in the house wants to play a game starting at midnight. The hunt is on.

There are no threats to deal with until the first bell tolls, so use this opportunity to get a feel for the house and seek out the flashlight. It spawns randomly in every playthrough but if you’re quick enough you’ll have no problem spotting it. Get a feel for door locations, and hiding spots. Also do not enter the basement under any circumstances. You will die and it will be unavoidable if you enter before the right time.

Keep looking around until it hits midnight and the real game begins.

12 A.M. – Kiki

The first antagonist you’ll face in Emily Wants to Play is Kiki. This porcelain doll wants to play a little game that involves turning off the lights in the house. The house is scary enough with the lights on, so having them suddenly go off can lead to problems. You’ll find drawings around the house telling you to look away from her whenever in the same room, do not listen to that advice.

What you actually want to do is stare at her as if you were playing a staring contest. You’ll hear a giggle when she’s behind you, and she’ll sometimes turn the lights off when she enters your room. Immediately locate her and do not take your eyes off of her until she disappears.

Kiki will not appear at 2 A.M. and 4 A.M. so you can rest easy about dealing with her at those two times.

1 A.M. – Mr. Tatters

Emily Wants to Play is scary enough with the whole notion of moving dolls, but why-oh-why did they have to make one a clown with a booming voice. Mr. Tatters likes to play Red Light/Green Light. If you’re unfamiliar with the childhood game, you’re not allowed to move until granted permission by the person running the game (in this case it’s Mr. Tatters).

Mr. Tatters will start going after the player at 1 A.M. and will suddenly appear before the pizza boy. You will hear a deep laugh followed by an “uh, uh, uh” when the doll holds its hands up, as if to tell the player to stop. Do not move at all, even looking around without actually moving in any direction will mean instant death. Remain still until the clown sighs, signifying that it’s given up for the moment. Mr. Tatters will leave you alone at that moment allowing you to go about your business (which will partially entail surviving Kiki as well).

From the moment Mr. Tatters appears, he will remain in the game with the only exception being 4 A.M. so prepare to deal with this clown for the remainder of the night.

2 A.M. – Chester

When 2 A.M. hits, you’ll want to start being more mindful of doors. This is when Chester comes into play, and he is absolutely terrifying. This little bastard loves to play tag, and the last thing you want is to be touched by this possessed dummy.

You will either see Chester or hear his laughter (higher pitched than that of Mr. Tatters). At this point, you’ll want to get the hell out of whatever room you’re in . This particular doll is insanely fast and will start rushing towards you. A good tip is to stay near doors. You never actually have to get close to any doll to deal with them, so unless you’re looking for collectibles, you don’t really have to step deep into each room.

So, make sure you don’t panic and rush to a door. Once you exit the room, you’re safe until the next time you hear Chester.

3 A.M. – The Trifecta

It’s time to put all that you’ve learned so far to use. For this hour of Emily Wants to Play you’ll have the pleasure of playing with all three dolls. This sounds much harder than it is, largely due to the fact that you’re playing with three dolls with three very different games. Luckily the game is designed well enough where this doesn’t become a major headache.

Stay calm and remember who plays what. Kiki wants to stare, Red Light/Green Light with the clown, and run from the dummy. You’ll have more threats than usual since it’s spread across all three for the first time, but it’s still very manageable. Just remember to let go of your mouse when you hear Mr. Tatters as moving during his game will be the most likely cause of your demise.

Oh, and do stay out of the basement, it still isn’t time for that just yet.

4 A.M. – Emily Wants to Play

The basement is finally open, but that’s not exactly a good thing. Emily, the little girl who started this night of “fun” is finally on the prowl. The three dolls will disappear from the game for the duration of this hour, so you will only have to deal with this dead little girl. Unlike the other antagonists, Emily isn’t a doll. This was the little girl who last lived in the house and died under some very mysterious circumstances.

Emily’s game of choice is Hide and Seek. A timer will appear at the bottom of your screen (a little over a minute) and you must find her before the time expires. Do not turn off the lights while moving about the house. If you do so, she will ignore the timer and come to kill you and there is no defense against her whatsoever.

Once she’s found, you simply have to find her again over and over until the next hour begins and things get really hectic.

5 A.M. – Party Time

You’re in the home stretch, this is the final hour and if you can survive this you’re home free. There’s just one little problem, everyone wants to get in on the game. Emily remains in play but she is now joined by all three dolls. You’ll have to deal with everyone’s games while also keeping an eye on Emily’s own Hide and Seek timer.

Sometimes one of the dolls will be in the room right with Emily so make sure to deal with their game before approaching the titular enemy. If Chester happens to be in there with her quickly dip out and then come back in (Emily will stay in her place).

Keep an ear out for each of the distinctive laughs to know what you have to do. Stay calm and move swiftly through the house and you’ll survive the night. Once 6 A.M. hits everyone will vanish and the door will open. Each of these demonic beings had a great time, and you are welcome to return and play whenever you like.
