Black Desert Online: How to Get a Horse by Taming, Breeding, and Buying

Become one with the horse.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Like most MMORPGs, Black Desert Online allows players to use mounts. Early on in the game, you can get a donkey for free as part of a special quest, but it is far from an exemplary mount for your soon to be seasoned warrior. Horses are far more suited for riding and combat.

Getting a horse isn’t as simple as that first donkey, though. If you want to wait for one as a quest reward, you won’t get the opportunity until you’re well into Black Desert Online. There are two other options available to players who need one sooner: purchasing and taming. After you get your first horse, you’ll then be able to obtain more through breeding, but we’ll get to that. First, let’s cover how to buy one.

Purchasing a Horse

Purchasing a horse from a local stable allows you to choose from a selection of steeds at varying prices. This is far from a cheap option, although it does guarantee you receiving a horse. You’ll need at least 40,000 Gold to purchase a horse with absolutely no skills, and if you want skills, you’ll have to pay either a very large sum or put some work into taming and breeding.

Taming a Horse

Taming a horse requires quite a bit of time and effort. Before you even consider this option, you must at least level 20. Attempting at a lower level will just result in nothing happening.

Once you hit level 20, head to a Stabler. You’ll need to purchase lassos and carrots from this NPC so that you can go tame a wild steed. A lasso costs 1500 Gold, and you’ll need more than one just in case you mess up the mini-game (which we’ll get to), and carrots will help to calm your future companion. Purchasing 5 lassos should do the trick; it never hurts to have extra.

Now you’ll have to search open fields and valleys until you locate a herd of horses. Aim for one of the members and use your lasso to start the taming mini-game. This mode will require you to stay attentive – you’ll have to hit the Space Bar rapidly to fill up a meter past a certain point. After this, you will be allowed to approach a bit before the meter triggers again. Continue to complete the meter each time, and when you get close enough you will be able to feed the horse a carrot and attempt to mount.

Mounting isn’t guaranteed even if you successfully completed all mini-games. If you get bucked off, use another lasso and try again. After you successfully mount a horse, you will have to register it.

Registering is easy, so don’t worry. Simply ride your new mount to a stable and dismount next to the NPC in charge. You will be asked to name it, and then it’s all yours.

Breeding

Breeding is very reliant on female horses, or mares, and their Breeding Points. These points let you know how many more times it can be used to breed new horses.

If you own a female horse, you can rent a night with a male horse at the Breeding Market. If you own a male horse, you can rent him out to the breeding market for cash, but you won’t get any offspring from its breeding. If you own both a female (with Breeding Points) and a male horse, you can breed the two together on our own.

After around three hours of breeding, you will have a new horse with a random gender and one skill. You can sell horses you breed or take them as your new mount, the choice is yours. Breeding is also a good way to make some extra coin on the side.
