Switch and Wii U Version Differences – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has finally been confirmed to be releasing on both the Switch and the Wii U on March 3 to coincide with the former’s release date. Of course, with the game coming to the more powerful Switch now as well, players may be wondering what differences they can expect to see between the two different versions.

In a statement given to IGN, Nintendo revealed that the Switch version would benefit from a number of improvements thanks to it being more powerful than the Wii U. While both games will run at 30 frames per second, these are the main differences you’ll see between the Wii U and Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

First things first, the Switch version of the game renders in 900p when in the dock and running on your TV, while the Wii U version comes in at 720p. The Switch version will also benefit from higher-quality environmental sounds, allowing the game to fully realize its open-air feel that the title eludes to. This means that the sounds of steps, grass, and running water will all sound more realistic on the Switch in comparison to the Wii U version.

On top of this, there are some minor differences, too. The Wii U version will require 3GB of storage space, some of the on-screen icons and button prompts will be different to accommodate the different control schemes. Finally, those awesome-looking Special and Master Editions of the game will only be available on the Switch version.

Other than this, fans will be pleased to know that the game will remain the exact same on both platforms. That means no exclusive levels, areas, or features, aside from the technical improvements listed above.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the Nintendo Switch will both release worldwide on March 3.
