Zelda Breath of the Wild: How to Get a Blood Moon

Blood Moon – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Blood Moons are an interesting event in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They exist to make enemies respawn in the world, ensuring that you always have something to fight as you explore. They also happen to have an interesting perk which adds one random perk to all dishes you cook while it’s active. While nobody wants annoying enemies to come back, the cooking perk is a good reason to actually want a Blood Moon to happen in your game. So how can you get one to appear?

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do to make a Blood Moon show up outside of playing the game and letting time pass. They are completely random. We’ve tried killing tons of enemies and ignoring enemies and nothing seemed to trigger it. The only thing we do know is that they occur at night. Some players have reported them appearing during the daytime, but this seems to be very rare and most likely not intended.

You can always tell when a Blood Moon is about to happen, though. The music becomes sort of eerie and red ash starts to appear on your screen. When it actually triggers, a short cutscene of Zelda explaining its power will play (yes this happens every time, and yes you can skip it).
