What Was Aegon’s Dream in House of the Dragon? Explained

Come find out what Aegon's dream was about in House of the Dragon.

Going all the way back to the first season of Game of Thrones, there was talk of “the Prince that was promised” and the White Walkers beyond the wall. All of this dates back to the beginning of the Targaryen reign in Westeros and has been passed down through the generations. Here’s everything you need to know about Aegon’s dream in House of the Dragon.

What Was Aegon’s Dream in House of the Dragon? Explained

First, it’s important to have a quick little history refresher on the dreamer. Aegon Targaryen (aka Aegon the Conqueror), was the first king of the seven kingdoms in Westeros and the beginning of the Targaryen dynasty. Naturally, his high standing in the history of the house was sure to make any prophecies or traditions from him extremely important to the Targaryens.

Aegon Targaryen’s Dream, Explained

The prophecy about the prince that was promised has been passed down through the ages by each Targaryen king to their successor. While technically not about a male leader, that’s how the generations-long game of telephone remembered it.

This story is about Aegon the Conqueror’s prophetic dream that he had one night which drove the Targaryen to unite the seven kingdoms of Westeros. In this dream, Aegon foresaw the end of the world at the hands of an unnamed evil.

They didn’t use the term White Walkers yet, but Aegon described them as a darkness that would destroy the world of the living. The only thing that could stop this evil force from ending all life was a leader strong enough to unite the seven kingdoms against the coming darkness and — conveniently for their dynasty — who also had Targaryen blood. The name of this vision from Aegon was dubbed A Song of Ice and Fire.

Finally, here’s a neat little note about Viserys’ dagger with Aegon’s prophecy inscribed on it: this was the same weapon that was used to try to kill Bran Stark and ended up killing Littlefinger and the Night King at the hands of Arya Stark. Pretty cool, huh?
