Super Mario 64 is back on modern Nintendo platforms thanks to Super Mario 3D All Stars. The game is the same as the original Nintendo 64 version with some tightened up visuals and textures as a nice little bonus for those who pick up the 3D All Stars version. If you’re here, you’re probably wondering how to play as Luigi and if you even can in this version of Super Mario 64 & 3D All Stars. Here’s what you need to know.
Playing as Luigi in Super Mario 64 & 3D All Stars
If you’re a long time fan of the classic 3D platformer, you’re probably aware of a few things. First, the original game, in spite of rumors, did not feature Luigi as a playable character. There was the whole L is Real mystery, which did turn out to have some truth to it, but no, Luigi was not playable.
However, you’re probably also aware that the DS version of Super Mario 64 did feature Luigi prominently as a playable character. So what’s going on with the 3D All Stars version?
For better or for worse, depending on your view of the DS remake, Luigi is not in Super Mario 64 for 3D All Stars. Nintendo is using a version of the original N64 game, and despite the fact that yes, N64 models of Luigi were found, no he’s not playable in this version of the game.
Sorry if this is bad news, but at least you have your answer. But hey, at least you can still enjoy the old-school Wing Cap, Metal Mario, and Vanish Cap before Luigi and Wario showed up and stole them away from good ol’ Mario.
That’s all you need to know about Luigi in Super Mario 64 for 3D All Stars. Best of luck hunting down all of the game’s stars as only Mario.
