Tricks – Steep

While some of Steep’s challenges will task you with getting to a certain checkpoint in a set time, others will be about making your way down and pulling off tricks to ensure you look as stylish as possible. In these instances, you’re going to need to learn how to pull off tricks. Here are a couple of helpful tips to get you started.

First, you won’t be able to pull off any tricks if you’re not jumping. To jump in Steep, all you have to do is hold down the R2 or RT button before taking off and release it just as you see the blue marker at the end of the jump. Not all jumps will have these markers, however, so be sure to just let go at the very last moment.

Now that you’ve got your character prepared to do pull off some tricks, you’ll now need to use your left analog stick to get your character doing something. If you move the stick left or right, your character will begin to spin in that direction. The longer you hold it, the more they’ll spin. Remember, you’ll want to ensure you’re landing is smooth, though, to ensure you earn maximum points and can continue chaining tricks together.

If you want to perform barrel rolls or flips, you’ll want to push forward or pull back on the left stick. Again, don’t get too carried away with yourself. It’s better to land a simple trick than not land anything at all.

Finally, grabbing your board is done by pressing either L2/LT or R2/RT once you’re in the air. Whichever trigger you push will correspond with the hand that your character grabs the board with.

One final handy trick for newcomers is don’t hold forward on your left stick. Doing this puts you in the ‘tuck’ position, which will prevent you from pulling off a decent jump. Once you’re up to speed, let the stick return to the neutral position and you will move and be able to pull off tricks far easier.
