How to Equip & Change Weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2

With Red Dead Redemption 2 out now, millions and millions of players across the globe will be stepping into Rockstar’s epic western for the first time. With it comes a sense of familiarity. After all, it is still a Rockstar game and it takes place in the Wild West, just like Red Dead Redemption. Still though, there’s plenty of new. Maybe you aren’t familiar with the world of Red Dead at all. Maybe you need a refresher. Regardless, fear not. We’ve got you covered. Here’s how to equip and change weapons in RDR2.

So, you’re roaming around the Wild West, trusty revolver in hand (you never know when the Sheriff or rival posse might show up, right?). In the distance, you see a buck ripe for the taking. You, in your excitement, frantically press buttons, hoping one of them pulls out your rifle, but instead, something else happens. Now, you watch as the buck you were planning to kill runs away in terror of whatever you just did. Nobody wants this to happen. That’s why it is critical you know how to equip and change weapons in Red Dead Redemption 2.

To change your weapon, hold L1/LB. This will bring up the weapon wheel. With this up, you should see all of the weapon types you have available for use. Use the analog stick to highlight a specific weapon type you want to equip.

Within that weapon class, press L2/R2/LT/RT to cycle through the weapons and the direction pad to cycle through the available ammo. With that done, you can let go of L1/LB. Assuming you did everything correctly, you should see Arthur Morgan carrying the gun you selected. Now, go find that buck.

It’s important to note that you are limited in how many weapons you can carry on your person based on your weapon wheel. Any additional weapons will need to be stored on your horse. Make sure to equip the weapons you want to use before leaving your horse.

If you’re near your horse, you can access more weapons than you’re able to carry. Approach your horse, and then hit L1/LB. From there, you can see all the weapon types that you can carry. Equip the ones that you want to be your primary weapons in those slots that you’ll have access to regardless of where you are in the world.

Between your weapon wheel and your trusty steed, your favorite weapon will always be within reach.
