Pokemon Sun and Moon might introduce a giant cast of new pocket monsters to catch and train, but it also kicks it old school with some classics. Growlithe, the adorably fire-y pup from the first generation, makes his triumphant return!
In order to catch it, you will want to stay within Melemele Island, as it’s the only island that it inhabits. Walk past Route 2 and the Berry Fields. Where there is a Pokemon Center in this area of the island, just before you can enter Route 3, is where you will want to be. Once you see the Pokemon Center I’m talking about, walk a bit south to the patches of grass around there and do your thing to make Growlithe appear. Note that it does take awhile to get this Pokemon to appear, as it is rarer than the plethora of Yungooses and Pikipeks that you will come across.
It likely will have the following moves when you catch it:
- Bite (Dark)
- Ember (Fire)
- Roar (Normal)
- Leer (Normal)
As well as the ability to intimidate its opponent, lowering their attack.
Just keep trying and you will, in not time, get yourself a little mini Arcanine. Which, in case you are wondering, your Growlithe will involve into once you expose it to a Fire Stone.

A Bit More on Growlithe
This adorable, fire-y pup is part of Generation I ever since Red and Blue. It has a playful demeanor, but don’t let that fool you, it will absolutely wreck. Back in the day, it was the Pokemon of choice for some Fire Gym Leaders, in fact. Not only that, but it can evolve into the “true legendary” Pokemon, Arcanine, once it’s subjected to a Fire Stone. That’s right, the creators may have forgotten, but fans never will. Arcanine was listed among the likes of Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos at one point in time.
